CBOT Average Daily Volume Climbs 14.8 Percent To New Quarterly Record - June Average Daily Volume Increases 18.5 Percent From Last Year

The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) announced today that Exchange-wide average daily volume climbed to a new record in the second quarter.  Average daily volume rose to 2,889,059 contracts in the quarter ended June 30, up 14.8 percent from the same period last year.  Total volume in the quarter also reached a record 184,899,800 contracts, up 16.6 percent from the same period in 2004.

Exchange-wide average daily volume for June increased to 2,677,999contracts, up 18.5 percent over last year and 21.3 percent year-to-date (YTD).  Total Exchange volume in June increased to 58,915,968 contracts, up 18.5 percent from last year and 21.3 percent YTD.

The CBOT’s Agricultural futures and options complex experienced several monthly volume records in June, with trading activity in the complex rising to a new high of 11,238,713 contracts.  Volume in Corn futures rose to a record 3,446,087 contracts in June, while volume in Wheat futures increased to a monthly high of 1,088,042 contracts.  Trading in Soybean futures rose to a monthly peak of 2,577,329 contracts, and trading in Soybean options increased to a monthly high of 897,401 contracts.  Soybean Oil futures volume rose to a record 852,259 contracts in June, while Soybean Meal futures volume climbed to a record 1,024,952 contracts for the month.  In addition, on June 28, volume in Soybean Meal futures reached a new daily high of 80,822 contracts.

Total Exchange open interest at the end of June rose 16.9 percent from last year to 12,249,002 contracts.  Further, open interest in several CBOT Treasury futures and options products rose to new records during June.  Two-Year U.S. Treasury Note futures set an open interest record of 399,738 contracts on June 7, and 30-Day Fed Funds Options open interest rose to a high of 1,045,041 contracts on June 30.

CBOT Agricultural products also experienced several open interest records in June.  On June 23, Soybean futures open interest climbed to a high of 341,011 contracts, while Soybean options open interest rose to a high of 454,864 contracts.  That same day, open interest in Wheat futures rose to a record 238,633 contracts.

Year-to-date through June, a total of 5,018,407 futures and options orders, excluding futures spreads, were electronically sent directly to floor brokers using Electronic Clerks, or order receipt devices.  A new high of 94 percent of total Agricultural futures orders were filled electronically in June, compared to 81 percent in the same month in 2004.  In addition, on June 20, a total of 98 percent of Agricultural futures orders were filled by Electronic Clerks.

  • Agricultural futures and options complex rose 5.0 percent from last year and 13.4 percent from last quarter to 25,830,941 contracts.
  • Equity Index futures and options complex rose 23.4 percent from last year and 15.1 percent from last quarter to 7,342,602 contracts.
  • Precious Metals futures rose 31.6 percent from last year to 190,961 contracts.

  • Ten-Year U.S. Treasury Note futures rose 10.5 percent from last year to 16,778,710 contracts and 20 percent YTD to 113,554,344 contracts.
  • Five-Year U.S. Treasury Note futures rose 28 percent YTD to 63,019,971 contracts.
  • Two-Year U.S. Treasury Note futures rose 129.6 percent from last year to 1,811,379 contracts and 165.1 percent YTD to 10,323,341 contracts.
  • Thirty-Day Fed Funds futures rose 7.5 percent from last month to 826,474 contracts.
  • U.S. Treasury Bond options rose 59.1 percent from last year and 12.5 percent from last month to 1,572,999 contracts.  Volume rose 8.5 percent YTD to 8,746,877 contracts.
  • Ten-Year U.S. Treasury Note options rose 34.9 percent from last year to 5,267,791 contracts and 17.1 percent YTD to 32,270,571 contracts.
  • Five-Year U.S. Treasury Note options rose 25.9 percent YTD to 10,866,028 contracts.
  • Thirty-Day Fed Funds options rose 74.7 percent from last year and 24 percent from last month to 615,963 contracts.  Volume rose 64.9 percent YTD to 2,932,814 contracts.

  • Agricultural futures and options complex trade rose 36.5 percent from last year and 63.1 percent from last month to 11,238,713 contracts.
  • Wheat futures rose 38.3 percent from last year and 56.6 percent from last month to 1,088,042 contracts.  Volume rose 18.8 percent YTD to 5,214,643 contracts.
  • Corn futures rose 35.7 percent from last year and 57.5 percent from last month to 3,446,087 contracts.
  • Soybean futures rose 60.9 percent from last year and 77.2 percent from last month to 2,577,329 contracts.
  • Soybean Meal futures rose 24.8 percent from last year and 79.4 percent from last month to 1,024,952 contracts.
  • Soybean Oil futures rose 32.6 percent from last year and 50.7 percent from last month to 852,259 contracts.
  • Wheat options rose 46.7 percent from last year and 12.6 percent from last month to 202,336 contracts.  Volume rose 33.4 percent YTD to 1,118,896 contracts.
  • Corn options rose 45.5 percent from last month to 851,452 contracts.
  • Soybean options rose 54.8 percent from last year and 85.7 percent from last month to 897,401 contracts.  Volume rose 7.3 percent YTD to 3,677,967 contracts.

Precious Metals Futures

  • Precious Metals futures and options complex trade rose 70.1 percent from last year and 23.1 percent from last month to 73,931 contracts.  Volume rose 42.5 percent YTD to 401,822 contracts.
  • Volume in mini-sized Silver futures rose 57.6 percent from last month to 12,329 contracts.
  • Volume in full-sized Gold futures rose 36.2 percent from last month to 37,350 contracts.
  • Volume in full-sized Silver futures rose 72.4 percent from last month to 7,449 contracts.

Equity Complex Futures and Options

  • Equity Index futures and options complex trade rose 33 percent from last year to 2,304,846 contracts and 18.8 percent YTD to 13,720,492 contracts.
  • Volume in DJIA futures rose 53.7 percent from last month to 192,165 contracts.
  • Volume in mini-sized DowSM ($5) futures rose 41.1 percent from last year to 2,057,495 contracts and 24.7 percent YTD to 12,286,702 contracts.
  • Volume in mini-sized DowSM ($5) options rose 159.8 percent from last year to 44,966 contracts and 268.8 percent YTD to 410,704 contracts.
