CBOE's October Volume Rises 28% To 63.3 Million - Average Daily Volume Of 2.9 Million Contracts, Total Monthly Volume In Equity Options Sets New CBOE Record

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) announced today that October trading volume totaled 63.3 million contracts, up 28% over October 2005's volume of 49.6 million contracts. Average daily volume for the month of October was 2.9 million contracts, an increase of 22% over October 2005's average daily volume of 2.4 million contracts. Through the end of October, CBOE's year-to-date total volume is 561.9 million contracts, which is 46% ahead of the 384.6 million contracts traded through the end of October 2005.

During October, CBOE experienced its busiest month ever for equity options trading. The 38,416,714 contracts that traded during the month set a new all-time record, eclipsing the previous high of 37,147,481 contracts from May 2006. CBOE equity options volume was up 39% over October 2005, while year-to-date equity options volume has increased 43% to 323.4 million contracts.

CBOE Market Share Of Total Volume At 33% For October; Three Percent Gain In Index and ETF Option Market Share For The Month

CBOE market share of total industry volume during October was 33.1%, which was up 1% over October 2005. Equity options market share in October gained 2.1% over October 2005 and fractionally over September. CBOE's October market share in multiply listed index and ETF options was 39%, a gain of 3% over September. Year-to-date, CBOE's market share of total industry volume is up 2% over 2005 to 33.6%.

CBOE Seat Price Climbs To A Record Of $1.55 Million During October; Third Quarter 2006 Revenue Increases 23%

- Volume in index and exchange traded fund options totaled 24.9 million contracts during October, an increase of 13% over October 2005's volume of 21.9 million contracts. The top five most actively traded index and ETF options during October were: S&P 500 Index (SPX), iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM), Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking Stock (QQQ), Standard & Poor's Depositary Receipts (SPY) and S&P 100 Index (OEX).

- In equity options, volume during October totaled a record 38.4 million contracts traded, an increase of 39% over the 27.7 million contracts traded during October 2005. The top five most actively traded equity options during October were: Altria Group, Inc. (MO), McDonald's Corp. (MCD), Apple Computer, Inc. (AAPL), Google Inc. (GOOG) and Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO).

- For the second consecutive month, options on the S&P 100 Index with European-Style Exercise (XEO) set a new monthly volume record. October's volume of 544,295 contracts traded topped the previous high of 439,493 contracts from September 2006.

- The last seat sale for the month was recorded on October 24 at a price of $1,550,000, which was a new all-time high for CBOE.On the year, seat prices have risen 77%, up from the first seat sale of the year on January 5 for $875,000. Through the end of October, a total of 95 CBOE seats have traded, with 78 of those selling for one million dollars or more.

- Last week, CBOE announced its financial results from the third quarter of 2006. Total revenue increased 23% to $63.4 million, up from $51.6 million during the same period a year ago. Pre-tax income for the quarter ending September 30, 2006 was $16.3 million, nearly triple the $5.5 million pre-tax income achieved during the third quarter of 2005. CBOE's third quarter after-tax (net) profit of $9.1 million rose 173% above the after-tax profit of $3.3 million during the same quarter last year.

CFE Experiences Busiest Month Ever As October Volume Soars 430%; VIX Futures Hit New Highs For Single Day And Monthly Volume

October 2006 was the busiest month ever for CBOE Futures Exchange, LLC (CFE) as a total of 82,705 contracts traded, compared to October 2005's volume of 15,622 contracts. October's record volume topped the previous high of 56,295 contracts traded during May 2006.

Trading in VX futures, based on the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), set three records during October: 1) total monthly volume (79,187 contracts); 2) single day volume (10,673 contracts on October 10); and 3) new high in open interest (57,977 contracts on October 10).

Year-to-date volume at CFE is up 151% over 2005 as 387,944 contracts have traded during the first ten months of 2006, compared to 2005's year-to-date volume of 154,545 contracts. At the end of October, exchange open interest stood at 49,831 contracts, compared to the 15,276 contracts at the end of October 2005.
