CBOE'S November Volume Increases 40% TO 59.8 Million, - With Average Daily Volume Of 2.85 Million Contracts - CBOE Membership Trades At New Record High Today

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) announced today that volume during the month of November totaled 59.8 million contracts, up 40% over November 2005's volume of 42.76 million contracts. Average daily volume for the month was 2.85 million contracts, compared to average daily volume during November 2005 of 2.0 million contracts. Through the end of November, CBOE's year-to-date total volume is 621.8 million contracts, which is 45.5% ahead of the 427.4 million contracts traded through the end of November 2005, and 10 percentage points better than the industry-wide increase of 36%.

During November, CBOE traded 35.8 million equity option contracts, up 46% from the year-ago November volume of 24.6 million contracts. Year-to-date equity options volume has increased 43% at CBOE to 359.3 million contracts.

Total volume for Indexes and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) traded at CBOE increased to almost 24 million contracts, up 32% from last November. Year-to-date trading in Indexes and ETFs at CBOE has increased 49% over the same period in 2005, to a total of 262.5 million contracts.

CBOE Market Share Of Industry Volume Is 32% For November; Year-To-Date Market Share of 33.47% is Up 2.2% Over 2005


CBOE continued to be the lead U.S. options exchange with market share of total industry volume of 32.4% during November. Equity options market share in November gained 3.8% over November 2005, to 25.3%. CBOE's November market share in multiply listed index and ETF options was almost 41%, a gain of 4.7% over November 2005.Year-to-date, CBOE's market share of total industry volume is up 2.2% over 2005, to 33.47%.

CBOE Seat Price Sets New Record Today Of $1.7 Million

CBOE membership prices set a new record on Friday, December 1st, with a sale price of $1,700,000, beating the previous record of $1,550,000 which was set on October 24, 2006. Seat prices have risen 94% since the first seat sale of the year for $875,000 on January 5th. During November, 10 seats traded, ranging in price from $1,475,000 to $1,525,000. So far this year, 106 seats have traded.

A new record was set for trading volume in options on the Nasdaq-100 Index (NDX), with 994,264 contracts, beating the previous monthly record of 837,690 contracts, set in May 2006. Average daily volume during November in NDX was 47,346 contracts, an increase of 46% over November 2005.

Volume in options on the CBOE Volatility Index, VIX, continued at a strong pace, with 587,524 contracts trading in November, and open interest of 597,792 contracts at the end of the month. On November 20th, VIX options traded 121,164 contracts, marking the sixth day that VIX options volume exceeded 100,000 contracts since their launch on February 24th this year.

Options on the S&P 100 Index with European-Style Exercise (XEO) continue to post gains, with a total of 432,597 contracts trading, an increase of 123% over the 193,773 contracts traded in November 2005.

The top five most actively traded Index and ETF options during October were: S&P 500 Index (SPX), iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM), Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking Stock (QQQ), Standard & Poor's Depositary Receipts (SPY) and S&P 100 Index (OEX). The Russell 2000 Index options (RUT) had impressive gains during November, with volume up 154%, to 235,994 contracts traded.

In equity options, volume during November totaled 35.8 million contracts, an increase of 46% over the 24.6 million contracts traded during November 2005. The top five most actively traded equity options during November were: Apple Computer, Inc. (AAPL), Google Inc. (GOOG), Research in Motion (RIMM), Altria Group, Inc. (MO) and Hewlett Packard (HPQ).

During November at the CBOE Futures Exchange, LLC (CFE) a total of 47,037 contracts traded, an increase of 285% compared to November 2005's volume of 16,021 contracts. Year-to-date volume at CFE is up 245% to a total of 435,166 contracts trading. At the end of November, CFE open interest stood at 40,609 contracts, compared to the 11,875 contracts at the end of November 2005.

Trading in VX futures, based on the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), continued it's strong growth, with 42,959 contracts trading. Average daily volume in VIX futures during November was 2,046. Trading in DV futures, based on the CBOE DJIA Volatility Index (VXD) also gained traction as November volume reached 3,501 contracts, an increase of 50% over November 2005. Open interest in DV futures stood at 1,670 contracts at month's end.
