CBOE's Daily Volume Of 2.6m Contracts During September Increases 34% Over 2005 - Third Quarter Volume Of 162.3 Million Is 37% Ahead Of 2005, Year-To-Date Volume Surpasses 2005 Totals

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) announced today that average daily volume for the month of September was 2.6 million contracts, an increase of 34% over September 2005's average daily volume of 1.9 million contracts. For the month, total volume at CBOE was 52.5 million, up 27% over September 2005.

Trading volume at CBOE during the Third Quarter of 2006 totaled 162,256,386 contracts traded, 37% above the 118,438,865 contracts traded during the Third Quarter of 2005. At the end of September, CBOE's year-to-date total volume stands at 498,654,892 contracts, surpassing CBOE's total volume of 468,249,301 contracts traded for all of 2005. Additionally, CBOE volume at the end of September in equity options (285.0 million) and index options (213.6 million) has also topped the 2005 totals of 275.6 million and 192.5 million, respectively.

CBOE Market Share At 33% During September; Equity Options Market Share Gained Nearly 2% Over 2005

CBOE market share of total industry volume during September was 33%, which was down slightly from the previous month, but up 1.7% over September 2005. Equity options market share in September gained fractionally over August, and nearly two percentage points over September 2005. Year-to-date, CBOE's market share of total industry volume is up 2.2 percentage points over 2005, to nearly 34%.

New Records Set In Quarterly And S&P 100 Index Options; Last Seat Sale Of September Was $1.3 Million

- Volume in index and exchange traded fund options totaled 22.4 million contracts during September, an increase of 32% over September 2005's volume of 17.0 million contracts. The top five most actively traded index and ETF options during September were: S&P 500 Index (SPX), iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM), Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking Stock (QQQ), Standard & Poor's Depositary Receipts (SPY) and S&P 100 Index (OEX).

- In equity options, volume during September totaled 30.1 million contracts traded, an increase of 24% over September's 2005's volume of 24.2 million contracts. The top five most actively traded equity options during September were: Altria Group, Inc. (MO), Apple Computer, Inc. (AAPL), Valero Energy (VLO), Intel Corporation (INTC) and General Motors (GM).

- On Tuesday, September 19, CBOE experienced record volume in Quarterly options. A total of 142,989 contracts traded in the five Quarterly options -- Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking Stock (QQQQ), iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM), DIAMONDS Trust, Series 1 (DIA), Standard and Poor's Depositary Receipts/SPDRs (SPY), and Energy Select SPDR (XLE) -- topping the previous high of 133,421 contracts from August 16. CBOE began trading Quarterly options on July 10, 2006.

- Options on the S&P 100 Index with European-Style Exercise (XEO) set a new monthly volume record with 439,493 contracts traded, eclipsing the previous record of 399,881 contracts traded in July 2006.

- On Tuesday, September 19, CBOE began trading options on the CBOE Exchange Index (EXQ), the new benchmark index based on the stocks of the six publicly-traded U.S. stock exchanges.

- The last seat sale for the month was recorded on September 27 at a price of $1,345,000. On the year, seat prices have risen 54%, up from the first seat sale of the year on January 5 for $875,000.

September Is Fourth-Busiest Month On Record At CBOE Futures Exchange; Strong Trading In VIX Futures Continues

Volume at CBOE Futures Exchange, LLC (CFE) totaled 35,118 contracts traded during September, an increase of 465% over September 2005's volume of 6,213 contracts. September was the fourth-busiest month at CFE since its launch in 2004. Volume in VX futures, based on the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), was 31,916 contracts traded during September.

Year-to-date volume at CFE is up 120% over 2005 as 305,239 contracts have traded during the first nine months of 2006, compared to 2005's year-to-date volume of 138,923 contracts.

On September 14, CFE reached a new milestone as open interest stood at 50,100 contracts, topping the 50,000-contract benchmark for the first time ever. At the end of September, exchange open interest climbed to 57,334 contracts, a new all-time high at CFE.
