Exchange-wide volume for June 2003 totaled 25,340,487 contracts (14,659,422 calls and 10,681,065 puts), up 20% versus the 21,165,444 contracts traded in June 2002 and up 11% when compared to the previous month's (May 2003) total of 22,928,895 contracts. June was the fourth consecutive month this year that exchange-wide volume posted gains over the prior year. For the month of June, average daily volume was 1,206,690 contracts. At the end of June, open interest reached 103,788,204 contracts, 27% higher than the close of June 2002.
Stock options volume in June 2003 totaled 15,710,788 contracts (10,650,814 calls and 5,059,974 puts), a 16% increase over the 13,550,971 contracts traded in June 2002 and up 9% over the previous month's (May 2003) total of 14,380,860 contracts. For the month of June, average daily volume in stock options was 748,133 contracts. Open interest in stock options stood at 87,854,967 contracts at the end of June 2003, up 23% from the end of June 2002.
For the fourteenth consecutive month, total index options volume posted gains at CBOE. In June 2003, total index options volume reached 9,618,719 contracts (4,001,054 calls and 5,617,665 puts), an increase of 26% over the 7,611,008 contracts traded in June 2002 and 13% higher than the previous month's (May 2003) total of 8,536,530 contracts. For the month of June, average daily volume in index options totaled 458,034 contracts. At the end of June 2003, open interest in index options was 15,920,254 contracts, exceeding the June 2002 level by 55%.
Options on the S&P 500 Index (SPX) were the most-actively traded index options at CBOE during June 2003, with volume totaling 2,917,301 contracts, which was an increase of 21% over the June 2002 volume of 2,417,547 contracts and up 3% over the previous month's (May 2003) total of 2,824,203 contracts. Average daily volume during June in SPX options was 138,919 contracts. Open interest stood at 3,926,828 contracts at the end of June 2003, a gain of 25% over year-ago levels.
Trading volume for options on the S&P 100 Index (OEX) experienced a slight increase as June 2003 volume in OEX options totaled 1,282,707 contracts, versus the 1,277,214 contracts from June 2002, but gained 19% when compared to the previous month's (May 2003) total of 1,081,509 contracts. Average daily volume during June in OEX options was 61,081 contracts. Open interest stood at 245,033 contracts at the end of June 2003, rising 5% above the 2002 level.
Trading volume for options on the Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking Stock (QQQ) totaled 2,723,704 contracts, an increase of 62% over the June 2002 volume of 1,684,034 contracts and 37% above the previous month's (May 2003) total of 1,993,529 contracts. Average daily volume during June in QQQ options was 129,700 contracts. Open interest stood at 8,028,101 contracts at the end of June 2003, an increase of 65% over the June 2002 level.
Trading volume for options on the Nasdaq-100 Index (NDX) totaled 145,178 contracts, an increase of 47% over the June 2002 volume of 98,452 contracts and 49% over the previous month's (May 2003) total of 97,390 contracts. Average daily volume during June in NDX options was 6,913 contracts. Open interest stood at 107,811 contracts at the end of June 2003, up 63% from the previous year's total.
June 2003 trading volume for options on DIAMONDS (DIA) totaled 746,775 contracts, surging 144% above the June 2002 total of 305,835 contracts. Average daily volume during June in DIA options was 35,561 contracts, while open interest stood at 652,915 contracts at the end of June 2003, 494% above the year-ago levels. CBOE launched options on DIAMONDS on May 20, 2002.
Volume for options on the Russell 2000 Index (RUT) totaled 42,083 contracts, an increase of 83% over the June 2002 volume of 23,043 contracts. Average daily volume during June in RUT options was 2,004 contracts. Open interest stood at 122,470 contracts at the end of June 2003, an increase of 61% from June 2002.
