CBOE Shatters Records In April

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) celebrated its 28th anniversary in April by rewriting the record books. New single-day records were set for exchange-wide trading volume, for stock option volume, for volume in options on the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJXSM), and volume in the CBOE Mini-Nasdaq-100 Index® options (MNXSM). Options on the DJX and MNX options also set new monthly trading volume records.

Total volume at CBOE in April increased to 29,454,146 contracts (17,881,792 calls and 11,572,354 puts) traded, an increase of 4% over April 2000, when 28,413,006 contracts traded. A new record for single-day trading volume was established April 18, when a total of 2,695,462 contracts traded. Two days later, on April 20, the second-highest volume day in exchange history was established, with trading volume of 2,573,479 contracts. In April, CBOE exchange-wide average daily volume was 1,472,707 contracts.

Open interest in all CBOE listed options stood at 52,661,464 contracts at month's end, an increase of 33% over the end of April last year, when open interest stood at 39,463,037 contracts.

Stock option volume for the month of April totaled 21,983,686 contracts (14,157,041 calls and 7,826,645 puts), a decrease of 8% from April 2000's stock option volume of 23,891,706 contracts. On April 20, a single-day record for stock option volume was established when 2,168,408 contracts traded. Open interest in stock options stood at 42,323,032 contracts (28,955,501 calls and 13,367,531 puts) at the end of April, an increase of 19% over the close of April 2000, when open interest stood at 35,510,206 contracts.

Volume in equity LEAPS® (Long-Term Equity AnticiPation Securities®) increased significantly in April, as investors turned to longer-term options in response to market volatility. Total volume in equity LEAPS totaled 2,281,351 contracts, an increase of 23% over April 2000 volume of 1,855,391 contracts.

In its second full month of trading, volume in the Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking StockSM, or QQQ, rose to 2,169,418 contracts, making it the most popular product traded at CBOE.

Total index option volume for April at CBOE rose to 7,467,090 contracts (3,722,461 calls and 3,744,629 puts) compared to 4,518,596 contracts in April 2000, an increase of 65%. Trading in S&P 500® Index options (SPXTM) totaled 2,001,093 contracts, an increase of 5% over April 2000 volume of 1,907,012. Trading in SPX LEAPS totaled 96,251 contracts in April, an increase of 63% over April 2000 volume of 59,053 contracts. Trading volume for the month in S&P 100® Index options (OEX®) was 1,084,387 contracts.

Trading in options on the Dow Jones Industrial AverageSM (DJX) set a new monthly record of 1,177,763 contracts traded, an increase of 155% over April 2000 when 462,455 contracts were traded. On April 23, a single-day DJX volume record was established when 117,337 contracts traded.

Trading volume in MNX, an index product based on one-tenth of the Nasdaq-100 Index®, posted its most impressive figures to date with 641,548 contracts traded in April, an increase of 27% over the previous month's volume. On April 26, MNX options established a single-day volume record when 72,650 contracts traded. Average daily volume stood at 32,077 contracts. Open interest in MNX options stood at 699,808 contracts at the end of April.
