CBOE Sets Single-Day Volume Record In S&P 500 Index (SPX) Options - Thursday, December 15 And Friday, December 16 Are Two Of The Busiest Trading Days In CBOE History, Cap Record-Breaking Year

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) announced today that reported volume in options on the S&P 500 Index (SPX) at CBOE on Friday, December 16th was 884,985 contracts, setting a new single-day volume record in SPX options. Today's SPX volume surpassed the previous high of 801,974 contracts traded on September 16, 2005.

Total exchange volume at CBOE on Friday, December 16th was a reported 3,419,972 contracts, while volume on Thursday, December 15th was 3,615,458 contracts, respectively, the fourth and second busiest single trading days in the Exchange's 32-year history. The busiest trading day in CBOE history was April 15, 2005, when 3,969,548 contracts traded.

Also on Thursday, December 15th, CBOE set a new record for total index option volume in a single day. The 2,060,745 index options traded eclipsed the previous high of 1,925,840 contracts on April 15, 2005.

Total trading volume in 2005 will set a new all-time record at CBOE as more than 427 million contracts have been traded through the end of November. This is an increase of 29% over 2004 and already well above CBOE's previous all-time annual trading volume record of 361 million contracts traded in 2004. Average daily volume at CBOE through the end of November is 1,850,124 contracts.
