CBOE Sets New Year-To-Date Record

Total trading volume at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the world's largest options exchange, hit a new year-to-date record for the end of November with 301,757,649 contracts (194,397,120 calls and 107,360,529 puts) trading, which is 33% ahead of the previous November year-to-date record of 226,477,440 contracts, set in 1999.

Year-to-date volume in stock options reached a record 258,083,066 contracts (175,177,728 calls and 82,905,338 puts), an increase of 48% over the year-to-date total of 174,602,171 contracts traded at the end of November 1999.

Monthly trading volume at CBOE declined slightly as 25,993,195 options contracts (15,265,354 calls and 10,727,841 puts) traded in November, a 4% decrease from the November '99 volume of 27,162,793 contracts. Open interest in all CBOE listed options stood at 57,682,623 contracts at month's end, 28% higher than the close of November one year ago when open interest stood at 45,221,826 contracts.

In November, average daily volume was 1,237,771 contracts, the fifthteenth consecutive month that average daily volume has exceeded a million contracts per day at CBOE. Seven of the top ten highest single-day volume totals in the Exchange's history have taken place in 2000.

During the month of November a total of 22,031,129 stock option contracts (13,501,585 calls and 8,529,544 puts) traded, a slight decrease of 3% from November 1999's stock option volume of 22,729,285 contracts. Open interest in stock options trading stood at 53,214,867 contracts (34,002,601 calls and 19,212,266 puts) at the end of November, an increase of 31.5% over the close of November '99 when open interest stood at 40,457,360 contracts.

Total index options volume for November at CBOE was 3,961,422 contracts (1,763,320 calls and 2,198,122 puts) compared to 4,430,584 contracts in November 1999, a decline of 11%. Trading in S&P 500® Index options (SPX) totaled 1,794,893 contracts (776,702 calls and 1,018,191 puts.) Trading volume for the month of November in the S&P 100® Index options (OEX) was 1,044,705 contracts (513,686 calls and 531,019 puts.) Trading volume in CBOE's newest index product, the MNXsm, continued to post impressive figures with 358,399 contracts (199,774 calls and 158,625 puts) traded. Average daily volume stood at 17,067 contracts, while open interest in MNX stood at 289,491 contracts at the end of November.

The CBOE's newest product, the iSharesSM S&P 100® Index Fund (OEF), was launched on October 27th. The iShares S&P 100 Index Fund is an exchange traded fund that seeks investment results which correspond generally to the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the S&P 100 Index®. In its first full month of trading, iShares posted a total volume of 92,600 shares traded.
