CBOE Sets New Single-Day Volume Records: Friday's Volume Of 5.3M Contracts Is The Busiest Trading Day In CBOE History; - SPX Options Trading Sets New Record

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) announced today that reported trading volume at CBOE on Friday, January 20th was more than 5.3 million contracts, setting a new record for the busiest single trading day in the Exchange's 33 year history, and the busiest day for any U.S. options exchange. The previous record of 3.97 million contracts was set at CBOE on April 15, 2005. Trading volume at CBOE in 2005 was a record-setting 468.2 million contracts, with average daily volume of 1.86 million contracts-30% higher than 2004.

Trading in options on the S&P 500 Index (SPX) also reached a new milestone, with more than 996,703 contracts reported, breaking the previous volume record of 801,974 contracts traded on September 16, 2005. Open interest in SPX options at today's open was 6,808,762 contracts. Average daily volume in SPX options during 2005 was 284,931 contracts, 45% higher than the year before.
