CBOE Sets New Single-Day Volume Record For DJX Trading

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the world's largest options exchange, announced today that volume in Options on the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJX) established a new single-day record yesterday, August 15, when 136,915 contracts traded. This surpasses the previous record of 136,293 contracts traded on November 21, 1997. During the first eleven trading days of August, average daily volume in DJX options has been approximately 69,625 contracts.

Yesterday's single-day volume record follows a record-breaking month of July. Total volume for the month of July in DJX surged to an all-time high of 1,485,582 contracts - an increase of 174% over July 2001. The previous monthly volume record was established in April 2001 when 1,177,763 DJX contracts traded. In July, average daily volume was 67,526 contracts, while open interest stood at 898,895 contracts at month's end, an increase of 51% over last year. Through the end of July, year-to-date volume was up 41% versus last year with 6,534,782 contracts traded.
