CBOE Registers Volume Gain For Third Consecutive Month

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the world's largest options exchange, announced today that volume at CBOE during November totaled 23,084,363 contracts, a rise of 7% when compared to the year-ago level. This marked the third consecutive month that exchange volume at CBOE posted a gain over the 2002 total.

November highlights at CBOE included:

For the seventh time this year, CBOE monthly volume eclipsed the 2002 monthly total.

S&P 500 Index (SPX) was the most actively traded index option as November volume increased 8% over November 2002 with a total of 2,940,891 contracts traded.

A trio of Nasdaq-based products experienced robust trading during the month: the Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking Stock (QQQ) was the second most-actively traded product with 1,689,195 contracts traded, while volume in options on the Nasdaq-100 Index (NDX) increased 73% and volume in the CBOE Mini-NDX Index options (MNX) increased 55% over year-ago totals.

The top 5 stock option classes traded at CBOE during November were Microsoft (MSFT), Time Warner, Inc. (TWX), General Electric (GE), Cisco Systems (CSCO), and Citigroup, Inc. (C).

During November, CBOE added an additional twenty-six classes to CBOEdirect HyTS, its new hybrid trading system. CBOE now lists a total of 222 classes on Hybrid.
