Date 09/12/2015

  • Expansion Targets Growing Educational Demand in Asia
  • First International Extension of CBOE Options Institute

The Chicago Board Options Exchange® (CBOE®) today launched the first international extension of the world-renowned CBOE Options Institute at Singapore Exchange (SGX) in a ceremony attended by CBOE Chief Executive Officer Edward T. Tilly and SGX Chief Executive Officer Loh Boon Chye.

The CBOE Options Institute at SGX is designed to leverage CBOE’s options education expertise with SGX’s connectivity with investors across Asia. The Options Institute, which marks its 30th anniversary this year, continues to set the standard for investor education globally and reaches an estimated 40,000 investors annually.  Its experienced instructors conduct nearly 400 educational events per year, including classroom training at The Options Institute’s state-of-the-art Chicago facility.

“We are thrilled to join with the SGX team to officially open The CBOE Options Institute at SGX,” said Tilly. “CBOE has long been committed to educating investors around the world about the effective use of options to manage risk and achieve investment goals, but this marks our first international educational presence. We believe education is essential to the growth of vibrant markets, and this collaboration will enable us to quickly meet increasing demand for options and volatility trading education in the region.”

First announced in July, The CBOE Options Institute at SGX will be part of Singapore Exchange’s SGX Academy. Classes begin today, led by Russell Rhoads, Director of Program Development with The Options Institute and a leading authority in the options and volatility space.

The collaboration between the two exchanges highlights the commitment both CBOE and SGX have to providing high-level investor education. The Options Institute’s trademarked content, which highlights CBOE products, will be customized for the region by CBOE and translated into local languages by SGX. Instructors at The CBOE Options Institute at SGX will be trained by veteran instructors from The Options Institute at CBOE.

In keeping with CBOE’s commitment to global expansion, the exchange hosted its first-ever CBOE Risk Management Conference (RMC) Asia in Hong Kong on November 30 and December 1, adding a premier Asian financial industry conference for users of equity derivatives and volatility products to its annual U.S. and European RMC events.

CBOE increasingly has made access to its products more convenient for both international and U.S. customers who trade outside of regular U.S. trading hours. CBOE Volatility Index® (VIX® Index) futures now trade nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week.

In March 2015, CBOE expanded trading hours for VIX options and S&P 500® Index (SPX) options with an additional trading session that runs from 2:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. CT, Monday through Friday, which coincides with the opening of the markets in London and afternoon trading in Singapore and Hong Kong.
