CBOE Maintains Record Volume Pace for the Year, Open Interest at Record Levels

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) closed the second quarter of 1999 with record breaking year-to-date volume levels. Total option volume at the CBOE hit a new year-to-date record for June of 113,104,596 contracts (72,294,060 calls and 40,810,536 puts) which is 14.6 % ahead of last year's record setting year-to-date pace of 98,714,011 contracts. During the month of June, a total of 18,759,310 option contracts (12,129,039 calls and 6,630,271 puts) changed hands at the CBOE, a 5.0% increase over year ago levels. Average daily volume in all CBOE listed options during June was 852,696 contracts. A new record was set for exchange wide open interest at month's end standing at 23,669,551 contracts at the close of June, 29% higher than June 1999. Year-to-date volume in stock options reached a record 85,035,277 contracts (60,432,877 calls and 24,602,400 puts), an increase of 29% over the previous year-to-date June record of 65,906,964 contracts set at the close of June, 1998. During the month of June, 1999 a total of 14,267,549 stock option contracts (10,161,881 calls and 4,105,668 puts) traded, an increase of 23.8% over June 1998. Open interest in stock options set a new month end record, standing at 20,069,165 contracts (12,855,625 calls and 7,213,540 puts) at the end of June 1999, an increase of 39.3% over June, 1998. Total index option volume for June at CBOE was 4,485,744 contracts (1,965,273 calls and 2,520,471 puts). Trading in S&P 100® Index options (OEX®) reached 1,972,795 contracts (900,559 calls and 1,072,236 puts) and open interest stood at 313,821. Trading volume for the month of June in the S&P 500® Index options (SPX) was 1,839,626 contracts (818,119 calls and 1,021,507 puts). Open interest in SPX options stood at 1,693,827 contracts at the end of June. Volume in Options on the Dow Jones Industrial AverageSM (DJX) totaled 263,547 contracts (82,440 calls and 181,107 puts) for the month of June. Open interest stood at 344,212 contracts at month's end. Record volume in the CBOE Internet Indexes resulted in a 20% increase in overall sector index volume over June 1998. Volume in the CBOE Internet Index (INX) set a refcord with a total of 6,757 contracts for the month. Volume in the GSTI Internet Index (GIN) was 2,276 contracts. Volume in the Dow Jones Internet Commerce Index (ECM) was 895 contracts.
