Exchange-wide volume for January 2003 totaled 22,114,466 contracts (12,502,844 calls and 9,611,622 puts), up 24% versus the 17,829,539 contracts traded in December 2002. For the month of January, average daily volume was 1,053,070 contracts. At the end of January, open interest reached 64,774,480 contracts, up 5% over the close of January 2002. When compared to the year-ago volume of 26,164,701 contracts traded in January 2002, exchange-wide volume decreased 16%.
Stock options volume in January 2003 totaled 13,561,789 contracts (8,471,393 calls and 5,090,396 puts), an increase of 31% over the 10,335,685 contracts traded in December 2002. For the month of January, average daily volume in stock options was 645,799 contracts. Open interest in stock options stood at 54,159,121 contracts at the end of January 2003, up 2% from the end of January 2002. When compared to the year-ago volume of 19,928,001 contracts traded in January 2002, stock options volume declined 32%.
For the ninth consecutive month, total index options volume posted gains at CBOE. In January 2003, total index options volume reached 8,548,192 contracts (4,029,741 calls and 4,518,451 puts), an increase of 37% over the January 2002 total of 6,234,247 contracts and a 14% increase over the previous month's, December 2002, total of 7,489,027 contracts. For the month of January, average daily volume in index options totaled 407,057 contracts. At the end of January 2003, open interest in index options was 10,603,888 contracts, 31% higher than January 2002.
Options on the S&P 500 Index (SPX) were the most-actively traded index options at CBOE during January, with volume totaling 3,023,780 contracts, which was an increase of 39% over the January 2002 volume of 2,168,283 contracts. Average daily volume during January in SPX options was 143,990 contracts. Open interest stood at 3,834,883 contracts at the end of January 2003, an increase of 28% over year-ago levels.
Trading volume for options on the S&P 100 Index (OEX) increased 37% in January over 2002. January volume in the American-style exercise OEX options totaled 1,054,248 contracts, versus the 771,375 contracts from January 2002. Average daily volume during January in OEX options was 50,202 contracts. Open interest stood at 251,572 contracts at the end of January 2003, an increase of 28% over 2002.
Volume in Options on the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJX) totaled 943,171 contracts, an increase of 62% over the January 2002 volume of 581,610 contracts. Average daily volume during January in DJX options was 44,913 contracts. Open interest stood at 939,511 contracts at the end of January 2003, an increase of 54% over year-ago levels.
January trading volume for options on DIAMONDS (DIA) totaled 629,586 contracts, an increase of 64% over the December 2002 volume of 383,364 contracts. Average daily volume during January in DIA options was 29,980 contracts. Open interest stood at 386,657 contracts at the end of January 2003, an increase of 41% over the December 2002 level. CBOE launched options on DIAMONDS in May 2002.
Trading volume for options on the Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking Stock (QQQ) totalled 2,075,808 contracts, an increase of 9% over the January 2002 volume of 1,908,104 contracts. Average daily volume during January in QQQ options was 98,848 contracts. Open interest stood at 3,485,755 contracts at the end of January 2003, an increase of 39% over the January 2002 level.
Volume for options on the Russell 2000 Index (RUT) totaled 28,019 contracts, an increase of 241% over the January 2002 volume of 8,210 contracts. Average daily volume during January in RUT options was 1,334 contracts. Open interest stood at 129,527 contracts at the end of January 2003, an increase of 954% over January 2002.
