Total exchange volume for the month of November was 23,988,614 contracts (14,432,584 calls and 9,556,030 puts), a decrease of 8% from the November 2000 level when 25,993,195 contracts traded. In November, open interest in all CBOE listed options stood at 85,407,272 contracts (53,757,578 calls and 31,649,694 puts) at month's end, an increase of 40% over the end of November last year, when open interest stood at 61,090,615 contracts. CBOE exchange-wide average daily volume for the month was 1,142,315 contracts, compared to November 2000's average daily volume of 1,237,771 contracts.
Stock option volume for the month of November totaled 17,750,025 contracts, a decrease of 19% from November 2000's level of 21,976,233 contracts. Open interest in stock options stood at 74,534,416 contracts (48,406,020 calls and 26,128,396 puts) at the end of November, an increase of 32% over the year-ago November level of 56,622,988 contracts.
Volume in equity LEAPSTM (Long-Term Equity AnticiPation Securities) for the month of November increased by 11% to 1,541,375 contracts, up from 1,391,251 contracts traded in November 2000.
The S&P 500® Index option (SPXSM) regained its position as the most actively traded index option at CBOE, with a total of 1,965,471 contracts traded, an increase of 10% over the November 2000 volume of 1,794,893 contracts. Open interest in SPX stood at 2,093,859 contracts at the end of November, an increase of 6% over year-ago levels.
Options on the Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking StockSM (QQQ), continued to be among the most actively traded index contracts at CBOE. QQQ volume reached 1,877,903 contracts for the month of November. Open interest in the QQQ stood at 4,721,945 contracts at the end of the month, up 11% from October's month-end level of 4,270,953 contracts.
Trading volume during the month of November in options on the Dow Jones Industrial AverageSM (DJX) rose sharply to 762,247 contracts traded-an increase of 190% over November 2000's level of 263,059 contracts. Open interest in the DJX options stood at 886,015 at month's end, compared to 476,215 contracts at the end of November 2000, an increase of 86%.
Trading volume for the month of November in the S&P 100® Index options (OEX®) was 692,310 contracts, compared to 1,044,705 contracts in November 2000. Volume in options on the S&P 100 Index with European-style exercise (XEOSM), launched on July 23rd of this year, was 104,667 contracts during November.
Volume in the popular Mini Nasdaq-100® Index options (MNXSM) for the month of November was 409,091 contracts, representing an increase of 14% over the November 2000 total of 358,399 contracts traded. Open interest in MNX stood at 755,096 contracts, up 162% from the end of November last year when open interest stood at 288,491 contracts.
