Total exchange volume for the month of June was 21,165,444 contracts (11,071,432 calls and 10,094,012 puts) traded, a decrease of 8% from the June 2001 level of 23,063,288 contracts traded. Open interest in all listed options continued to rise in June with 81,592,129 contracts (48,899,526 calls and 32,692,603 puts) standing at month's end, an increase of 2% versus June 2001, when open interest stood at 79,769,523 contracts. CBOE exchange-wide average daily volume for the month was 1,058,272 contracts, compared to June 2001's average daily volume of 1,098,252 contracts.
Stock option volume for the month totaled 13,550,971 contracts (7,791,677 calls and 5,759,294 puts) traded, a decrease of 21% from June 2001's level of 17,231,811 contracts. Open interest in all CBOE stock options stood at 71,286,423 contracts (43,276,157 calls and 28,010,266 puts) at the end of June, a decline of 1% versus June 2001 when equity open interest stood at 72,033,245 contracts.
Pacing the overall gains in index volume at CBOE were Options on the Dow (DJX). For the month of June, 1,153,996 contracts traded, an increase of 87% from June 2001's level of 618,738 contracts. At the end of June, year-to-date volume in DJX options was 5,049,200 contracts traded, up 24% versus the year-to-date total of 4,077,329 contracts traded through June 2001. Open interest in DJX options stood at 701,368 at month's end, an increase of 25% over last year.
In June, options on the S&P 500 Index (SPX) were the most heavily traded index options at CBOE. For the month, 2,417,547 contracts traded, an increase of 45% over the June 2001 volume of 1,665,977 contracts. At the end of June, year-to-date volume in SPX options was 12,333,001 contracts traded, an increase of 2% from June 2001's total of 12,101,390 contracts traded. Open interest in SPX stood at 3,135,257 contracts at the end of June, an increase of 13% over year-ago levels.
Volume during the month of June in the S&P 100 Index options (OEX) was 1,277,214 contracts traded, up 72% over the 744,449 contracts traded last June. Open interest in OEX stood at 232,803 contracts at the end of June, an increase of 44% over June 2001. June 2002 volume in the S&P 100 Index options with European-style exercise (XEO), launched on July 23 last year, was 141,349 contracts traded.
Volume for the month of June in options on the Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking Stock (QQQ) totaled 1,684,034 contracts traded, a decrease of 1% from the 1,692,614 contracts traded in June 2001. Open interest in the QQQ stood at 4,868,574 contracts at the end of the month.
In its first full month of trading, June volume in options on DIAMONDS (DIA) totaled 305,835 contracts traded and open interest stood at 109,856 contracts at month's end. CBOE began trading options on DIAMONDS on May 20, 2002. DIAMONDS Trust, Series 1, are shares in an exchange-traded fund designed to track the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA).
