CBOE Average Daily Volume Continues To Soar In 2000

The new millennium started with a bang at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) as overall
average daily volume reached 1,505,578 contracts during the month of January, surpassing the previous average daily volume record for one month of 1,226,110 contracts which was set in December 1999. On January 21st a new daily volume record was set when 2.3 million contracts traded.
Stock option volume at CBOE totaled 25,576,107 contracts (18,358,042 calls and 7,218,065 puts) for
the month of January, representing an astounding increase of 72% over the year ago levels of 14,895,026 contracts (10,726,708 calls and 4,168,318 puts) for January of 1999. Average daily volume in CBOE's longer-term stock options (LEAPS?) rose to 98,103 contracts. Total volume in equity LEAPS for the month was 1,962,068 contracts, an increase of 82% over January last year.
Total exchange-wide volume reached 30,111,559 contracts (20,277,561 calls and 9,833,998 puts) in
January representing an increase of 55% over year ago levels. Exchange wide open interest was 82% higher than the close of January last year, standing at 33,270,840 contracts (19,707,837 calls and 13,563,003 puts) at month's end.
Total index option volume for January at CBOE was 4,525,065 contracts (1,917,136 calls and 2,607,929 puts) a decrease of 1% over year ago levels. Trading in S&P 500? Index options (SPX) reached 2,145,774 contracts (906,588 calls and 1,239,186 puts) a 30% increase over year ago levels. Open interest in SPX stood at 2,035,557 contracts. Trading volume for the month of January in S&P 100? Index options (OEX) was 1,714,829 contracts (755,814 calls and 959,015 puts).Open interest in OEX options stood at 262,744 contracts at the end of January.
Total volume in Options on the Dow Jones Industrial AverageSM (DJX) was 251,401 contracts (104,700 calls and 146,701 puts). Volume in Options on the Nasdaq 100 (NDX) continued to be strong in January with 227,502 contracts (96,713 calls and 130,789 puts) trading. This represents an 8% increase over December 1999 and nearly 200% over year ago levels.
