CBOE August Volume Posts Gain Of 31%; Volume On Expiration Friday Surpassed Two Million Mark

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) announced today that August volume totaled 26,894,775 contracts traded, an increase of 31% over the August 2003 volume of 20,600,587 contracts. Through the end of August, CBOE's year-to-date volume of nearly 236 million contracts traded is 31% ahead of 2003's pace. Volume on Friday, August 20th, expiration for August contracts, was 2,050,716. This was the eighth time this year that single-day trading volume surpassed the two million contract mark.

August highlights at CBOE included:

  • During August, volume in index options rose 38% as over 11 million contracts traded, while volume in stock option classes (equities) increased 26% with over 15 million contracts traded.
  • Options on the S&P 500 Index (SPX) were the most-actively traded index options at CBOE during August as volume totaled 4,150,787 contracts, an increase of 47% over 2003.
  • The top five stock option classes traded at CBOE during August were: Intel Corp. (INTC), Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO), Citigroup, Inc. (C), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), and Google Inc. (GOOG).
  • On August 6th, the CBOE Futures Exchange set a new record for single-day trading volume with 1,967 contracts traded, surpassing the previous high of 1,844 contracts from July 12th. Volume in August at CFE, launched on March 26th, totaled 10,059 contracts, an increase of 13% over the previous month. Open interest at month's end stood at 6,309 contracts.
