Carbon Trading Market Workshop Staged In Sydney

Date 16/03/2000

The Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE) and State Forests of New South Wales conducted a two-day workshop devoted to the emerging market for carbon trading in Sydney, today and yesterday.

The workshop was titled 'Supplying Carbon Rights from Sequestration to SFE's Carbon Trading Market' and focused on how carbon derived from carbon sink forests (consistent with Article 3.3 of the Kyoto Protocol) could be supplied to the carbon trading market currently being developed by SFE.

The workshop was attended by 60 delegates from Australia and New Zealand, and included forestry experts, insurance companies, government representatives and market consultants. Speakers presented on three key areas: carbon accounting standard used to measure carbon; process of independent verification of the carbon; and minimum standards a carbon supplier will be required to meet to supply carbon to SFE's market.

The papers presented during the workshop will be made available on - www.carbontrading.com.au - the web site dedicated to carbon trading which was launched by SFE in December 1999.

SFE and State Forests announced their partnership to develop a market for carbon credits trading in August last year. The market is planned to be operational in the second half of 2000 and will be the world's first exchange-traded market for carbon credits.
