Canadian Foundation For Investor Education "Exchanges" Program Kicks Off In Vancouver - New National Educational Program - Index Investing Focus Of First Session At Vancouver Art Gallery

Date 28/01/2002

Canadians are embracing Exchange Traded Funds (or ETF's) as a fast and easy alternative to investing in indices or traditional companies that track Canada's capital markets. On the TSE, 13 of these funds began trading in 2001 - ranging from products tracking the broad market indices to those of specific key sectors like energy and gold that make up the broader market indices.

"There are many investors who favour index investing over investing in traditional companies because it makes index and sector investing easier," said Steve Rive, General Manager of iUnits at Barclay's Global Investors Canada Limited. "When you look at the historical returns, it is very hard to meet or beat the performance of the major indices."

The Canadian Foundation for Investor Education will hold its first "Exchanges" session on Tuesday, January 29th at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The topic for discussion is "Index Investing in Canadian Markets." The speaker, Steve Rive, is from Barclays Global Investors Canada Limited. Mr. Rive oversees the development, promotion and ongoing management of BGI's iUnits product line in Canada. He has over 10 years experience working in stock exchanges in Canada and in the Far East in areas of product and market development. He is also the Chair of the Investment Fund Institute of Canada's Public Relations Committee.

This session is part of the "Exchanges" program, a free national speaker seminar series that features members of the media, government and the financial industry hosting discussions on a variety of financial topics of interest to the retail investor and general public. The program is part of the TSE's newly created Canadian Foundation for Investor Education, which aims to provide a forum to discuss issues of relevance to Canada's capital markets and make them relevant and interesting to the public.

The CFIE will also host a bi-annual symposia series on Canadian capital markets, the first of which will be held March 8th in Toronto. The subject of the first symposium will be national securities regulation.

"Exchanges is a new national program which will bring key topics and issues to cities right across Canada," said, Lonnie Tate, Chairman of the CFIE. "We have a national mandate to educate and inform and investors are very receptive to meeting and hearing what the experts have to say." Future sessions will be held monthly in major urban centres across Canada.
