CalPERS Promotes Patricia K. Macht To Director Of External Affairs

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) announced the appointment of CalPERS veteran Patricia K. Macht to the newly created deputy-level position of Director of External Affairs, Chief Executive Officer Anne Stausboll announced today.

“Pat has ably served on our Senior Leadership team for the last 15 years, and has done an exceptional job of leading the System’s internal and external communications programs,” Stausboll said. “She will be taking her CalPERS knowledge, know how and leadership skills to the next level, as she brings under one umbrella the functions of public affairs, state and federal governmental relations and outreach to our stakeholder groups.”

This latest announcement marks the completion of deputy-level recruitments at CalPERS. Kathleen Hamilton was recently appointed to the post of Deputy Executive Officer, Benefits and Stephen Kessler was appointed Deputy Executive Officer, Operations.

Macht joined CalPERS in August 1995 as the Chief of Public Affairs, where she headed up development of a full-fledged internal and external communications and public affairs program. She was promoted to the post of Assistant Executive Officer in 2002. She has also represented the System before the media, state and national interest groups and the public.

Previously, she directed public affairs for the California Integrated Waste Management Board. Prior to entering public service, Macht worked in corporate communications/public affairs positions in the private sector for five years and was a journalist for 10 years.

She holds a journalism degree from the University of Maryland and received a lifetime achievement award for public service communications in 2008 from the State Information Officers Council.

Brad Pacheco, Assistant Public Affairs Chief, will lead CalPERS Public Affairs Office until a replacement is named.
