Grevious, CalPERS Assistant Executive Officer, Health Benefits, will report to Chief Executive Officer Fred Buenrostro, who oversees the nation's largest public pension fund, its 1,600 employees, and a budget of more than $241 million.
He will fill a position vacated by the retirement of Loren D. Suter.
"Jarvio has proven skills as an outstanding administrator and I'm confident that he will develop new initiatives to safeguard the retirement and health benefits of our members," said Buenrostro.
Beginning today, Grevious will oversee programs for retirement and health benefits and provide long-term direction for their delivery, program changes, enhancements and additions.
Terri Westbrook, Chief of the Office of Health Policy and Plan Administration, will serve as Acting Assistant Executive Officer, Health Benefits.
Grevious has more than 24 years of experience in State government, including one year as CalPERS health administrator. During that time, the Health Benefits Program implemented a dozen key initiatives of the CalPERS Strategic Plan for Health. He was instrumental in working with Suter to bring new leaders into the Health Benefits Branch and to make significant headway against soaring annual premium increases.
Grevious played a key role in working with Blue Shield to negotiate an exclusive provider network to eliminate high-cost hospitals, beginning in 2005, and to retain contracting agencies in our Program through the new regional pricing plan.
Before coming to CalPERS, Grevious was the chief officer overseeing more than 4,500 staff and an annual budget of more than $21 billion for the California Department of Social Services. He also advised the department Director, the Health and Welfare Agency, and the Governor's Cabinet on social services policies, operations, and financing.
Earlier, he implemented the Department's Cal-WORKS program, and had prior service with the California Energy Commission, State Departments of Finance and Education, and the Legislative Analyst's Office.
Grevious received a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Economics from California State University, Sacramento, in 1980, and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University in 1984. In 1994, he attended the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
CalPERS provides retirement and health benefits for 1.4 million public employees, retirees and their families, and has assets totaling more than $177 billion. For more information on CalPERS, please visit www.calpers.ca.gov.
