CalPERS Board Election Scheduled

Date 19/02/2009

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) Board of Administration today approved the Notice of Election which specifies the election schedule for filling the two At-Large member seats on the CalPERS Board.

The election -- scheduled for the Fall of 2009 -- is for a 4-year term of office that runs from January 16, 2010 through January 15, 2014. The seats are currently held by Charles P. “Chuck” Valdes and Kurato Shimada, whose terms expire on January 15, 2010. Shimada has expressed his intention to run for re-election. Valdes has reported he will not seek re-election.

Interested candidates must submit a CalPERS Nomination Petition with signatures by at least 250 active or retired CalPERS members. Nomination Petitions will be available on March 23, 2009, when the election officially starts. The petitions containing the original signatures must be received at CalPERS Headquarters in Sacramento by the deadline, May 14, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.

Ballots will be mailed to eligible active and retired members on September 4, 2009. Voted ballots must be returned by October 2, 2009. Ballots will be tabulated in October. If no candidate receives a majority vote in either of the two seats, there will be a runoff election in the affected election, with ballots mailed to eligible voters on November 9, 2009, with a December 4, 2009 deadline for returning voted ballots.

It is suggested that anybody who is interested in running for either Board seat review the Notice of Election, or contact the CalPERS Board Election Office to get more specific information about eligibility and nomination requirements and the deadlines for submitting required documents. The telephone numbers are (916) 795-3952 or toll-free (800) 794-2297.
