CalPERS Board Committee Chairs And Vice Chairs Chosen

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) Board of Administration has elected the following chairs and vice chairs of key Board committees:

  • Investment Committee – Henry Jones, Chair; George Diehr, Vice Chair
    Jones joined the CalPERS Board in 2008. He was unopposed for re-election and was seated automatically for his second term in 2012. He retired as chief financial officer of the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1998, and also served as an adjunct professor at California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Diehr began serving on the CalPERS Board in 2003 after being elected by state employees, including employees of the California State University System. He began serving his third four-year term in 2011. Dr. Diehr has been on the faculty of the College of Business Administration at California State University, San Marcos, since 1990.


    Other Investment Committee members are Michael Bilbrey, John Chiang, Richard Costigan, Dan Dunmoyer, Rob Feckner, JJ Jelincic, Bill Lockyer, Priya Mathur, and Ronald Yank.

  • Pension and Health Benefits Committee – Priya Mathur, Chair; George Diehr, Vice Chair
    Mathur began serving on the Board in 2003 after being elected by CalPERS public agency members, and is now serving her third term. Mathur is a principal financial analyst for the Bay Area Rapid Transit District.


    Other Pension and Health Benefits Committee members are Michael Bilbrey, John Chiang, Rob Feckner, JJ Jelincic, Henry Jones, Bill Lockyer, and Ronald Yank.

  • Finance and Administration Committee – George Diehr, Chair; Richard Costigan, Vice Chair
    Costigan has served on the CalPERS Board as the representative of the State Personnel Board (SPB) since January 2011. He was appointed to the SPB by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007 and is senior director of state and government affairs for the national law and consulting firm of Manatt, Phelps and Phillips.


    Other Finance and Administration Committee members are John Chiang, JJ Jelincic, Henry Jones, Bill Lockyer, and Ronald Yank.

  • Performance & Compensation Committee – Dan Dunmoyer, Chair; Michael Bilbrey, Vice Chair
    Dunmoyer was appointed to the CalPERS Board in 2009 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve as the insurance industry representative on the Board. He is senior vice president and head of legislative and regulatory affairs in the U.S. for the Farmers Insurance Group of Companies. Bilbrey was elected to the Board in 2011 by active and retired CalPERS members. He is the operations coordinator of the Citrus Community College bookstore in Glendora, CA. Bilbrey is also First Vice President of the California School Employees Association.


    Other Performance and Compensation Committee members are John Chiang, Richard Costigan, Bill Lockyer, Priya Mathur, and Ronald Yank.

CalPERS Board Governance Committee did not hold an election. The positions remain the same.

  • Board Governance Committee – Rob Feckner, Chair; George Diehr, Vice Chair
    Feckner, who is also President of the CalPERS Board, joined the Board in 1999 after being elected by the pension fund’s school members. He has worked for the Napa Valley Unified School District for the past 35 years and is the past president of the California School Employees Association. He is currently executive vice president of the California Labor Federation.


    Other Board Governance Committee members are Michael Bilbrey, Dan Dunmoyer, JJ Jelincic, Henry Jones, and Priya Mathur.

The Risk and Audit Committee did not meet in February. It will choose its chair and vice chair when it meets later this month.

CalPERS, with assets of approximately $235 billion, is the largest public pension fund in the U.S. It administers retirement benefits for more than 1.6 million California state, local government, and public school employees, retirees, and their families on behalf of more than 3,000 public employers, and health benefits for more than 1.3 million enrollees. The average CalPERS pension benefit is $2,332 per month. The average benefit for those who retired in the most recent fiscal year that ended June 30, 2011, is $3,065 per month.
