Turnover
Total number of trading days in February 2008 amounted to 20 days with total value traded of US$ 7,772.74 million (LE 42,750.07 million). Value traded of listed securities amounted to US$ 7,104.49 million (LE 39,074.70 million), of which shares, bonds and funds represented 98.04%, 1.96% and 0.00%, respectively. Unlisted securities i.e. Over the Counter trading reached US$ 668.25 million (LE 3,675.38 million), which represents 9% of total value traded for the month.
This is in comparison to January 2008, when value traded of listed securities amounted to US$ 19,424.12 million (LE 106,832.67 million), of which shares represented 99.23%, bonds 0.77% and funds 0.00%. In addition, the OTC trading amounted to US$ 433.20 million (LE 2,382.57 million) i.e. 2% of total trading (on- and off-exchange trading) which reached US$ 19,857.32 million (LE 109,215.24 million).
Total volume traded of listed securities market for this month reached 1,934.26 million securities.
During February 2008, 1,256,679 transactions were concluded with an average of 62,834 trades per day, as opposed to 1,172,777 transactions and an average of 58,639 trades per day in January 2008.
Indices
CASE 30 price index, the official market index, witnessed a 9.86% increase in February 2008 to reach 11,335.21 points and witnessed a YoY increase of 58.20%.
Likewise, the Dow Jones CASE Egypt Titans 20 index witnessed a 8.32% increase in February, to close at 2340.79 points 28/02/2008, and a 49.31% increase on a YoY basis.
Price Movements of Selected Shares
The ten most active stocks represented 44.10% of the total value & 66.20% of the total volume of shares traded for the month.
During the month of February, the top five gainers, on the official CASE market, were (in descending order of price change) Egyptian Container Handling (+1229%), Sokhna Port Development Company (+270%), Egyptian Contracting (Mokhtar Ibrahim) (+154%), Ismailia Misr Poultry (+108%) and Pens & Plastic Industries (Sicep) (+107%).
The top five losers were (in ascending order of price change) Universal for Paper and Packaging Materials (Unipack) (-26%), Cairo Development and Investment (-21%), Arab Aluminum (-16%), Egyptian Sponge (-12%) and National Investment & Reconstruction (OHH) (-11%).
Market Capitalization
Total market capitalization of shares amounted to US$ 163.2 billion (LE 897.6 billion) as of end of February 2008 compared to US$ 151.4 billion (LE 832.8 billion) in January 2008, representing a 7.8% increase.
The bond capitalization recorded US$ 678.3 million (LE 3.7 billion) for corporate bonds and US$ 13.3 billion (LE 73.3 billion) for government bonds at the end of February 2008 (Including Treasury Bonds according to Primary Dealers System).
Foreign Participation
In February 2008, foreign investors participated with 34.69% of the total market value traded with a net inflow of portfolio foreign investment totaling US$ 511 million (LE 2.8 billion).
