Turnover
Total number of trading days in December 2006 amounted to 20 days with total value traded of US$ 5,505 million (LE 31,487 million). Value traded of listed securities amounted to US$ 5,298 million (LE 30,302 million), of which shares, bonds and funds represented 98.93%, 1.07% and 0.00%, respectively. Unlisted securities i.e. Over the Counter trading reached US$ 207 million (LE 1,185 million), which represents 4% of total value traded for the month.
This is in comparison to November 2006, when value traded of listed securities amounted to US$ 3,645 million (LE 20,961 million), of which shares represented 93.85%, bonds 6.15% and funds 0.00%. In addition, the OTC trading amounted to US$ 524 million (LE 3,012 million) i.e. 13% of total trading (on- and off-exchange trading) which reached US$ 4,169 million (LE 23,973 million).
Total volume traded of listed securities market for this month reached 889 million securities.
During December 2006, 617,849 transactions were concluded with an average of 30,892 trades per day, as opposed to 708,869 transactions and an average of 32,221 trades per day in November 2006.
Indices
CASE 30 price index, the official market index, witnessed a 6.3% increase in December 2006 to reach 6973.41 points and witnessed a 10.3% increase on YoY.
However, the Dow Jones CASE Egypt Titans 20 index witnessed a 5.3% increase in December, to close at 1531.77 points on 28/12/2006, and a 10.7% increase on a YoY basis.
Price Movements of Selected Shares
The ten most active stocks represented 61.6% of the total volume of shares traded and 57.8% of total value of shares traded for the month.
During the month of December, the top five gainers, on the official CASE market, were (in descending order of price change) Omar Effindi (+3753%), Bank of Alexandria (+1340%), Al Arafa Investment and Consulting (+575%), Asek Company for Mining (+361%) and May for Textiles Manufacturing and Marketing (maytex) Co. (+137%).
The top five losers were (in ascending order of price change) Nozha International Hospital (-18%), Glaxo Smith Kline (-18%), Egypt for Poultry (-16%), Egyptians Abroad for Investment & Development (-15%) and National Glass & Crystal Co. (-15%).
Market Capitalization
Total market capitalization of shares amounted to US$ 93.4 billion (LE 534 billion) as of end of December 2006 compared to US$ 87.6 billion (LE 503.5 billion) in November 2006, representing a 6.1% increase.
The bond capitalization recorded US$ 0.7 billion (LE 4.2 billion) for corporate bonds and US$ 10.2 billion (LE 58.3 billion) for government bonds at the end of December 2006 (Including Treasury Bonds according to Primary Dealers System).
Foreign Participation
In December 2006, foreign investors participated with 32.6% of the total market value traded with a net inflow of portfolio foreign investment totaling US$ 2.1 billion (LE 12 billion).
