Busiest November Ever On LIFFE

The London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) had its busiest November ever with a total volume of 25 million futures and options contracts, an increase of 130% on November 2000. Average daily volume for the month was 1.15 million. Volumes for the first eleven months are 67% up on 2000.

In November 2001, LIFFE traded a record daily average nominal value of £541 billion (€876 billion) and a record total value of £11,912 billion (€19,297 billion), up 134% on November 2000. LIFFE has traded a record total nominal value of £90 trillion in the first eleven months, reinforcing its position as Europe's largest electronic exchange by value.

LIFFE's Chief Executive, Hugh Freedberg said, "During the month of November LIFFE had its busiest day ever, trading over 2.4 million contracts, exceeding the record 1.9 million in 1997. The Exchange's short-term interest rate products saw continued growth with the Three Month Euribor futures and options up 75% year-to-date."

Year-to-date, LIFFE's equity products have traded over 33 million contracts up 60% on 2000 and individual equity options have traded 1.1 million contracts, bringing the total this year to over 10 million, up 102% on last year.

Open interest reached an all-time high of 13,290,280 on 16 November 2001 and stood at 13,257,680 on 30 November 2001.
