Bursa Malaysia To Hold Evening Talks To Enhance Awareness On Corporate Governance

Date 04/08/2009

In its pursuit to uphold the standards of corporate governance in the capital market, the Exchange has a strong focus on education and awareness programmes. In this respect, these programmes are either undertaken by Bursa on its own or in collaboration with industry.

Between 6 August and 24 November 2009, Bursa Malaysia will be organising Evening Talks on Corporate Governance. This event is aimed to provide a platform for creating awareness as well as sharing of important corporate governance (CG) issues and challenges in the local and international scene with industry professionals.

Prominent speakers from the regulators, professional bodies, industry associations, listed companies and leading corporate governance experts will be presenting key topics on current issues surrounding CG.

Ms. Selvarany Rasiah, Chief Regulatory Officer of Bursa Malaysia said, "Awareness and understanding of current issues and challenges surrounding governance is essential for effective implementation of good corporate governance practices. This is the motivation behind the CG Evening Talks - to provide companies with an avenue to get updated on corporate governance-related information, and clarify issues and doubts, which will aid good corporate governance practices."

The inaugural talk on 6 August will feature the topic ‘The Spirit of Corporate Governance in Body Corporate' by Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA). This session will be lead by six panellists and will deal with understanding the principles of law and practice in the boardroom and general meetings, as well as common challenges in mediating boardroom conflicts.

All sessions will be held at Bursa Malaysia and will begin at 4pm and end at 6pm. Sessions during the fasting month will begin at 3pm and end at 5pm. The dates set for the talks are on 6 August, 24 August, 8 September, 14 September, 1 October, 13 October, 29 October, 9 November and 24 November 2009.
