Bursa Malaysia-i Wins Third Award As World’s First End-To-End Shariah-Compliant Investing Platform

Date 18/04/2017

Bursa Malaysia Berhad (“Bursa Malaysia”) today announced that its Bursa Malaysia-platform was awarded the Gold Medal for The Most Innovative Non-Food & Services Category at the MIHAS Awards 2017 which was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre recently. This is the third global recognition since Bursa Malaysia-was launched in September 2016. Bursa Malaysia-is the world’s first end-to-end Shariah-compliant investing platform.

The MIHAS Awards is held in conjunction with MIHAS 2017, the Malaysia International Halal Showcase, which is organised by Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) under the patronage of Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia (MITI). MIHAS 2017 saw participants from 33 countries, and is a key event in Malaysia’s calendar in its role as a world hub for the Halal industry.

Bursa Malaysia Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Seri Tajuddin Atan, said, “Bursa Malaysia-was introduced for the benefit of the Islamic capital market in ASEAN and beyond. Our vision and responsibility was to build the world’s first end-to-end Shariah-compliant investing platform as a conducive and comprehensive marketplace for Shariah investing and to further strengthen our Islamic capital market product offerings to cater to the widening pool of domestic and foreign investors and issuers. This initiative is Bursa Malaysia’s continued commitment to elevating Malaysia’s leading role as an Islamic finance marketplace. Bursa Malaysia-is also an extension of our core strategy on becoming a sustainable marketplace as it offers a socially responsible investment platform. So essentially it is a platform that’s for everyone seeking Shariah-compliant as well as socially responsible investment options.”

As a leading emerging market exchange for Shariah-compliant securities, Bursa Malaysia offers a broad selection of quality stocks. In addition, Malaysia’s Islamic capital market has generated considerable growth over the last few years which makes Shariah-compliant investment an attractive alternative for investors. As at end 2016, 74 per cent of companies listed on Bursa Malaysia are Shariah-compliant. The Shariah market capitalisation as at 31 March 2017 reached RM1.80 trillion, or 62.4 per cent of the total market capitalisation.

“With the launch of Bursa Malaysia-i, we will continue to intensify our efforts in forging collaborations with capital market players and participants for new market growth and product expansion.” Tajuddin added.
