Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Announces Winners Of The Derivatives Virtual Trading Challenge 2022

Date 17/01/2023

Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Berhad (“Bursa Malaysia Derivatives” or “the Exchange”) recently held a prize giving ceremony for the top five winners of its nationwide Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Virtual Trading Challenge 2022 (“DVTC 2022”) which was held from 7 November 2022 to 6 December 2022. The objective of the Challenge is to raise awareness and interest in the Malaysian derivatives market among millennials and undergraduates through experiential learning, while providing essential knowledge for beginners to start trading derivatives instruments in an informed manner.

DVTC 2022 was open to eligible Malaysian citizens and students aged 18 and above and had two entry categories, individual and university team categories. The challenge received a total of 4,467 registrations where the top five participants from each category with the highest account balances were awarded with cash prizes at the ceremony.

Participants were given a virtual capital of RM100,000 to trade in any of the five futures contracts on Bursa Marketplace Derivatives Trading Simulator (“DTS”). Throughout the challenge period, the participants received mentoring from DVTC 2022 Partner Brokers, namely AmInvestment Bank, Affin Hwang Investment Bank, CGS-CIMB Futures Sdn Bhd and RHB Investment Bank Berhad.

Ooi Kian Hin was crowned the DVTC 2021 champion from Individual Category and took home the grand prize of RM7,000 followed by 1st Runner-Up, Choo Jer Lyn and 2nd Runner-Up, Ng Zhang Lin, who both won RM5,000 and RM3,000 respectively. “Congratulations to all the winners and participants of DVTC 2022,” said Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, Chairman of Bursa Malaysia Derivatives and CEO of Bursa Malaysia. “Our annual DVTC enables retail investors, particularly beginners and the youth, an exciting opportunity to hone their trading skills with real-time data in a simulated environment. We hope the experience has not only helped them acquire the confidence to start trading, but also exposed them to the possibilities of building a career in the derivatives market as licenced representatives or professional traders."

“DVTC provides a platform for people to test their trading skills and promoting development of derivatives trading in Malaysia’s derivatives markets. I encourage people to participate in DVTC to explore derivatives and trading,” said Low York Hong, Head of Futures Broking at AmInvestment Bank.

"Playing the trade game is the most effective approach to learn about the market. You may spend countless hours reading books, enrolling classes and speaking with mentors, but you still won’t be as skillful as someone who made the first transaction. If you want to understand the market that you are trading in, you have to get in and make your own mistakes because your experience will not only prevent you from making the same mistakes twice, but it will teach you to rely more on your own judgment than others," said Kelvin Ho Jern Yang, Head of Futures at Affin Hwang Investment Bank.

“We would like to congratulate all DVTC 2022 winners and participants. We believe that the experience they gained from this challenge will benefit them in their future derivatives trading,” said Maxwell Ong Wai Boon, Head of Futures at CGS-CIMB Futures. “CGS-CIMB Futures is committed to educate the public in derivatives trading, and we look forward to more future collaborations with Bursa Malaysia to promote and develop Malaysia's derivatives market”.

"Thank you, Bursa Malaysia Derivatives, for hosting the DVTC 2022. RHB Investment Bank is honoured to have been a broker partner and played a part in mentoring participants for the competition. We are committed in educating the investing public and facilitate their trading journey in the futures market," said Vincent Chin, the Deputy Director, Business Development and Strategy at RHB Investment Bank.
