“Collaboration leads to strong results and we will continue to work together with our broker partners to bring investing awareness to the public and make our market vibrant and attractive to investors” said Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, CEO of Bursa Malaysia. “As global competition intensifies, it is critical that we continue our efforts to promote our market and the diverse range of offerings available for investors of varying risk appetites.

Overall, in 2022, the Exchange raised RM3.49 billion from both primary and secondary listings, a 27 percent increase over the RM2.75 billion raised in 2021. This includes 35 new listings, the highest on the Exchange since 2006, where a total of RM11.15 billion was raised contributing to the overall market capitalisation of RM1.74 trillion.

The retail segment continued to be a significant contributor, accounting for 25 percent of total average daily value (ADV). The Retail Investor Campaign 2022 that ran for nine months from January to September 2022 resulted in 85,158 new accounts opened with a traded value of RM8.8 billion, the Average Total Value per new account recorded at RM103,317 and also the reactivation of 3,616 inactive and dormant accounts.

Last year, the Exchange collaborated with brokers on a total of 359 educational and marketing events nationwide, reaching nearly 169,000 Malaysians, and this is expected to continue into 2023.

Concluded Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, “The retail market works together and complements the institutional market to generate volume that the Malaysian equity market needs. A healthy equity market ecosystem is paramount to ensure there is strong liquidity in circulation.”
