Bursa Malaysia Berhad announced the appointment of Professor Joseph Cherian as Independent Non-Executive Director to its Board of Directors line up, effective 1 January 2020.
Professor Cherian is Practice Professor of Finance and was the Founding Director of the Centre for Asset Management Research & Investments (“CAMRI”) at the National University of Singapore Business School.
Professor Cherian teaches and conducts translational research in areas related to the investment management industry. He has vast experience both in the professional and academic fields, with emphasis on financial knowledge, research, innovation and technology in the financial asset management industry.
He was previously a Managing Director at Credit Suisse in New York, serving as the Chief Investment Officer and Global Head of the Quantitative Strategies Group within Asset Management. While at Credit Suisse, he also served on various senior management, investments and risk committees of the asset management division. He is an Emeritus Member of the Johnson Graduate School of Management’s Dean’s Advisory Council at Cornell University and was also part of Singapore’s Central Provident Fund Advisory Panel.
Professor Cherian holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Master of Science and PhD in Finance from Cornell University.
Professor Cherian brings to the board a wealth of experience and deep understanding of the investment and financial landscape in Asia. His appointment on the board will provide greater diversity, enabling Bursa Malaysia to play a significant role in supporting the investment community as well as the development of a thriving marketplace.

The Board of Bursa Malaysia also announced the appointment of Dr. Reto Gruenenfelder as an independent member of the Technology and Cybersecurity Committee (“TCC”) effective 1 December 2019. A Board Oversight Committee of Bursa Malaysia chaired by Ms. Chong Chye Neo, the TCC comprises three other members who are Directors of Bursa Malaysia, i.e. Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, Encik Johari Abdul Muid and Puan Uji Sherina.
Dr. Reto has over 33 years of professional experience in Information Technology (“IT”). Currently an independent IT Advisor supporting enterprises on their digital transformation journey, Dr. Reto has led and supervised large banking transformations in Europe, Russia and Asia Pacific. Dr. Reto holds an MSc in Physics from ETH Zurich and a PhD on stochastic models from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology EPFL. His experience in the areas of Mobile Technology, Internet of Things, Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain will provide great insight into the enhancement of the capital market development from technology perspective.
