Bucharest Stock Exchange Is Promoting Romania's Capital Market Among Institutional Investors In London

Date 23/10/2014

The recent developments of Romania’s capital market was presented to institutional investors based in London in a conference organized by Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Bloomberg. The event, Romanian capital market – up the ladder Emerging Market, was hosted by EBRD at its headquarters on Wednesday, October 22, 2014.

This is the first of a series of events in London to promote Romania's capital market among institutional investors in this financial center. With these events, BVB aims to get institutional investors aware of the recent developments of the Romanian capital market and its objective to be upgraded from Frontier to Emerging Market status.

”Reforms of the capital market which are occurring in Romania, under the joint leadership of the Government, the National Bank of Romania, the Financial Supervisory Authority, BVB and other market institutions, are appreciated and also examined by the global market participants. Their involvement is one of the decisive factors for attracting higher capital flows, from which Romania will benefit. One of the strongest messages expressed during the meeting was that international players see the strict links between their investments and the formation of local capital. In this context, important projects undertaken so far and to be carried out by the FSA and Bucharest Stock Exchange were also commented, projects aimed at reviving the interest of individual investors and at enabling small and medium enterprises to raise funds through the AeRO market. For a couple of hours, the Boardroom of EBRD became indeed headquarters of discussions about the strategy for the Romanian capital market, having as background the achievements of this market for the last year”, stated Ludwik Sobolewski, BVB CEO.

The event was opened by Andras Simor (Vice President and CFO, EBRD) and HE Ion Jinga (Ambassador of Romania to UK). Speakers were: Bogdan Olteanu (Deputy Governor, National Bank of Romania), Misu Negritoiu (President, Romanian Financial Supervisory Authority), Gavin Ralston (Head of Official Institutions, Global Head of Products, Schroders), Jim Turnbull (Senior Capital Markets Advisor, EBRD), Laurent Cassin (Head of ECM for Northern & Central Europe, and Russia, Societe Generale), Lyle Schwartz (Investment Banking, EMEA, Goldman Sachs), Rupert Wood (Senior Advisor, Wood & Co), Lucian Anghel (President of the Board of Governors, Bucharest Stock Exchange) and Ludwik Sobolewski (CEO of Bucharest Stock Exchange).

During the conference discussions also revolved around the significant reforms which have been carried out and future plans to unblock procedural bottlenecks, which will ensure greater liquidity and improved access to markets. In the audience more than 60 people were present, representing 34 institutional investors.

The series of events Romanian capital market – up the ladder to Emerging Market is an invitation for the global capital markets' participants to express their views concerning the developments of the Romanian marketplace.

Such events will be organized on a quarterly basis and will give investors the opportunity to be updated on the latest developments at the Bucharest Stock Exchange and to liaise with the Romanian capital market’s decision factors.

Thus, BVB and market participants engaged in Romania are setting a bridge between Romania as a local stage of numerous initiatives supporting the development of the market and the world-class financial center that London is.
