BT Demerger Prompts FTSE Reshuffle

Date 15/11/2001

FTSE, the global index group, confirm tonight constituent changes to the FTSE 100, the UK's leading benchmark index. BT Group plc and mmO2 plc, the two companies created from the British Telecommunications demerger, will both become constituents of the FTSE 100. To make way for the new company, United Business Media, which is the smallest ranking stock in the FTSE 100 at tonight's market close, will move to the FTSE 250.

The changes will become effective at the close of business on Friday November 16 2001. Changes to other FTSE indices, including FTSE All-World and FTSE Eurotop indices will be announced at the close of European markets tonight.

Mark Makepeace, FTSE's Chief Executive said " FTSE's response to the demerger of BT in the indices is immediate, ensuring that the indices provide an accurate and up to date picture of market conditions. Investors have been able to anticipate the changes announced today, as FTSE Ground Rules are publicly available and easy to follow. "
