Date 02/12/2005

BOVESPA has launched in December 2005 the Corporate Sustainability Index ISE) that gathers corporations with high levels of economic, financial, social and environmental excellence. The new benchmark meets the world trend of focusing investments on sustainable, profitable and socially responsible companies.

ISE portfolio is composed by securities of companies committed to social responsibility, corporate sustainability and good practices in the Brazilian corporate market.

In order to evaluate the performance of BOVESPA listed companies about their sustainability aspects, the deliberative Board of the Index – composed by BOVESPA, ABRAPP (Brazilian Association of Pension Funds), ANBID (National Association of Investment Banks), APIMEC (Association of Capital Markets Analysts and Investment Professionals), IBGC (Brazilian Institute of Corporate Governance), IFC (International Finance Corporation), Ethos Institute of Social Responsibility and the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment, considered adequate to engage an institution expert in this subject – the Center for Sustainability Studies of the Business Administration School of São Paulo (CES-FGV).

The CES-FGV designed a questionnaire to verify the performance of the companies which issued BOVESPA's 150 most liquid stocks, considering the “triple bottom line” (TBL). The TBL concept refers to an integrated analysis of environmental, social and economical aspects and was developed by the English consulting company SustainAbility.

BOVESPA is the organization responsible for ISE development, as well as for the index calculation and technical management. The base for ISE has been set at 1,000 points for the date of November 30th 2005, and its dissemination initiated on December 1st 2005. In order to adapt to the initial base, the portfolio market value has been adjusted using a reducer (adjustment coefficient).

The index will be rebalanced annually, in which occasion the companies are re-evaluated in relation to their sustainability levels by fulfilling the questionnaire, which will be constantly improved, aiming at attending permanently the present demands of society.
