BOVESPA: Corporate Sustainability Index Will Be Launched On December 1, 2005

Date 26/07/2005

The Corporate Sustainability Index Board submitted to public referendum, from July 21 thru August 22, the questionnaire intended to evaluate the sustainability of those corporations candidate to take part in the Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI), to be introduced by BOVESPA on December 1, 2005.

Such document, prepared by Fundação Getúlio Vargas’s Sustainability Study Center, is available on www.ces.fgvsp.br. Suggestions and comments are to be forwarded to ise@fgvsp.br until August 22.

So as to stimulate the market’s and society’s participation in the Brazilian index referendum, which will bring together those sustainability-oriented companies, a public presence hearing will also be held on August 10 at FGV auditorium located at Avenida Nove de Julho, 2029, ground floor, São Paulo, Brazil.

The questionnaire is the first step of the process designed to select the corporations that will take part in CSI. The companies issuing the 150 most liquid stocks with BOVESPA will be provided with such questionnaire to select, among them, the group of up to 40 corporations that will compose the first index portfolio. The CSI will be reviewed on a yearly basis and weighted by the free-float (i.e. stocks outstanding and available on the market) of those member corporations.

Pursuant to the CSI methodology, corporations will be selected on an integrated basis according to the triple bottom line (TBL), a concept introduced by the English consulting company Sustain Ability, which assesses economic, financial, social and environmental elements. TBL principles have been added by corporate governance indicators, basic general ones and those related to the product nature.

In order to map the corporate sustainability scenario, the questionnaire poses 136 straightforward questions divided into four criterion sets: Policies (commitment indicators); Management (refers to plans, programs, goals and monitoring); Performance (performance indicators); and Legal Compliance (to assess the level of the compliance with the laws in force).

The CSI Board consists of the following entities: Brazilian Association of Closed Pension Plan Entities (Abrapp), Association of the Capital Market Investment Professionals and Analysts (Apimec), National Association of Investment Banks (Anbid), São Paulo Stock Exchange - (Bovespa), Brazilian Corporate Governance Institute (IBGC), Instituto Ethos de Empresas e Responsabilidade Social (Ethos Institute of Corporations and Social Responsibility), International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the Environment Ministry of Brazil.
