For the first quarter of fiscal year 2002 which ended December 31, 2001, average daily share volume on the BSE reached 40.4 million shares, up 62% compared to the first quarter of fiscal year 2001. Trade volume for the same time period increased 26% to 68,707 trades per day.
Two of the BSE's core trading programs, the Competing Specialist Initiative (CSI) and Beacon Remote™, contributed substantially to this growth in volume. Daily shares from CSI, which now accounts for more than half of the BSE's daily share volume, grew to 26 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2002, up from 9.4 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2001. Become Remote volume reached 5.4 million shares daily in the first quarter of fiscal year 2002, a four-fold increase from an average of 1.3 million shares traded daily during the same time period in fiscal year 2001. Since its inception in February 2001, Beacon Remote has grown to now make up 13% of the Exchange's daily share volume.
On a calendar year basis, the BSE closed the year 2001 with record-setting levels for the month of December. The Exchange's average daily share and trade volume jumped significantly during December 2001 by 60% and 43%, respectively, compared to all of calendar year 2001. In addition, on December 5th, the BSE's share volume reached a record-breaking 92 million shares per day. The previous single day record of 63 million shares per day was set on September 21, 2001.
