With the next harvest of Brazilian cotton coming up in the second semester of 2009, the BM&FBOVESPA Cotton Classification Laboratories have begun another cycle of activities. Located in São Paulo (SP), Sorriso (MT) and Rondonópolis (MT), in Brazil, these laboratories conduct both visual classification and High Volume Instrument testing to determine the fineness, maturity, strength and elongation of the cotton fibers through the use of HVI machines.
The BM&FBOVESPA cotton classification seal is recognized internationally and provides a value-added component to the product. As a result it has become increasingly more sought by trading companies and national textile industries. BM&FBOVESPA participates in the definition of the universal cotton standards under the leadership of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and it is a member of the Committee for International Cooperation between Cotton Associations (CICCA). In 2008, 1.4 million samples, or 18% of the Brazilian cotton crop, were classified by the BM&FBOVESPA laboratories.
The Exchange is firmly committed to rigorous compliance with all of the norms issued by the USDA and the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. In July, the BM&FBOVESPA Classification Laboratory received the most recent samples from the USDA which set the universal classification standards that will govern international cotton trading in 2009/2010.
Moreover, all Exchange classification laboratories use state-of-the-art technology for humidity and temperature control, in addition to their HVI fiber analysis equipment. During the harvest season, BM&FBOVESPA ensures that all classification results are delivered within 72 hours by maintaining 24-hour staffing with three work shifts, 7 days a week.
The BM&FBOVESPA cotton classification services began in 1930 at the former São Paulo Commodities Exchange (BMSP). Over 90% of the cotton classification professionals were trained at BMSP, which is the only institution authorized by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply to train and certify these professionals. The training of classification professionals is conducted at the Exchange’s own laboratories.
