BM&FBOVESPA Compensates 2014 Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Date 19/11/2015

BM&FBOVESPA has compensated greenhouse gas emissions that it was unable to reduce in 2014, thus becoming carbon neutral for another year. The initiative has been in existence since 2013 when the Exchange compensated 2011 and 2012. Since then the compensation process has become annual.

This action aims, among other things, to foster the adoption of sustainability best practices by publicly traded companies and by the market in general. The action is also in line with the Exchange’s Sustainability Policy (part of the Environmental Pillar) that the Board of Directors approved in 2013 and makes the commitment to climate change initiatives into reality.

To compensate 2014’s emissions there were 4,903 carbon credits (or 4,903 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent) purchased. These are generated within the scope of the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and named Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). Once again, the carbon credits purchased by the Exchange were generated by the Cetins and Cemat small-scale renewable energy project (Grid Connection of Isolated Systems) registered with the United Nations.

This project enables renewable energy generation in municipalities in the states of Tocantins and Mato Grosso, bringing benefits such as lower pollution and dependence on oil imports and creating jobs in areas that are geographically less attractive for other economic activity, resulting in greater social inclusion.

The compensation of greenhouse gas emissions is a step forward in the work that began in 2009 when BM&FBOVESPA made its first inventory of greenhouse gas emissions (since 2010, these emissions have been inspected by a third party). The Exchange thus identifies, manages and seeks to reduce its environmental impact, contributing to the global climate stabilization effort.
