This month’s highlights:

In April 2010, equity markets (Bovespa segment) reached a total volume of BRL 138.74 billion, in 8,098,072 trades, with daily averages of BRL 6.93 billion and 404,904 trades, respectively. In March, total volume reached BRL 148.81 billion, 9,038,122 trades, with daily averages of BRL 6.47 billion and 392,962 trades, respectively.
The financial volume of stock lending transactions in the Securities Lending Bank (BTC) reached a record BRL 38.52 billion in April, in comparison to BRL 36.61 billion in March. The total number of trades reached 78,813, compared to 79,050 in the previous month.
Derivatives markets in the BM&F segment (including financial and commodities derivatives) totaled 61,070,641 contracts and BRL 4.41 trillion in volume in April. That compares to 71,691,088 contracts and a volume of BRL 4.75 trillion in March. The daily average of contracts traded in the derivatives markets in April was 3,053,532 contracts, in contrast to 3,117,004 in March. Open interest contracts ended the last trading day of April with 36,074,650 positions, compared to 34,452,500 in March.
During the month of April, Direct Market Access (DMA) trading at BM&FBOVESPA’s derivatives market segment reached a historic record of 19,499,763 contracts traded, in 1,896,367 trades; in contrast to 18,404,891 contracts traded, in 1,983,044 trades in March. In April, the following records were also set: 1,684,139 contracts traded via co-location, in 467,545 trades, in contrast to 581,212 contracts in 183,326 trades in March; 8,799,424 contracts traded via DMA provider, in 859,888 trades, in comparison to 8,578,449 in 1,130,430 in the previous month.

Ibovespa ended April down 4.03%
The Ibovespa ended April down 4.03% at 67,529 points. Best performing stocks were: PDG Realt ON (+9.22%); Souza Cruz ON (+8.06%); Cemig PN (+7.79%); Lojas Renner ON (+7.45%); and Sabesp ON (+4.57%). The worst performing stocks were: TIM Participação S/A (-12.86%); Usiminas ON (-12.38%); Net PN (-12.02%); Telemar ON (-10.60%); and Fibria ON (-10.28%).
Foreign investors were responsible for 28.26% of the total volume
In April, institutional investors were responsible for 34.60% of the total volume, compared to 31.39% in March. Foreign investors came next, with 28.26%, compared to 25.81%; individual investors had 25.41%, compared to 30.67%; financial institutions, with 9.35%, compared to 9.81%; companies, with 2.30%, compared to 2.26%; and other types of investors with 0.09%, compared to 0.06%.

The net flow of foreign investment into the Brazilian stock market in 2010 as of April reached BRL 5,824,774,736.90, which is the combined result of the amount of BRL 7,106,389,498.90 in acquisitions carried out by foreign investors in the stock offerings and the negative balance of BRL 1,281,614,762.00 in direct trading at BM&FBOVESPA.
In April, the financial volume traded by foreign investors in the stock market was a negative BRL 1,078,044,990.00, which is the net balance between stock sales of BRL 39,624,742,379.00 and stock purchases of BRL 38,546,697,389.00.
The foreign investor participation in stock offerings, including IPOs, represented 69.0% of the total BRL 10,296,537,581.50 in transactions related to the publication of the closing announcement dates ending on May 4, 2010.

The financial volume registered in April by the seven BM&FBOVESPA Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) reached BRL 661.45 million, in contrast to BRL 582.54 million in March. ETFs BRAX11, CSMO11, MOBI11, BOVA11, SMAL11, MILA11 and PIBB11 registered 13,991 trades. In the previous month, the number of trades was 12,428. ETF BOVA11 reached the highest financial volume in April, with BRL 495.09 million, in comparison to BRL 401.57 in March.
Volumes and Trades – Financial Derivatives
In April, interest rate futures (ID) traded 31,850,132 contracts, in contrast to 36,134,810 in March. The US dollar futures ended the month with 7,845,885 contracts, compared to 8,180,860 in the previous month. The Ibovespa futures traded 1,556,020 contracts, compared to 1,627,445. The Euro futures contract (EUR) registered 31,685 contracts, in contrast to 19,775 contracts in March.
Volumes and Trades – Agribusiness Derivatives
In April, the BM&FBOVESPA agribusiness derivatives market (including futures and options) totaled 188,336 contracts traded, compared to 210,949 in March. Agribusiness markets totaled 144,450 open interest contracts, in contrast to 134,138 in the previous month.
