Date 03/07/2007

The Brazilian Mercantile & Futures Exchange (BM&F), the São Paulo Stock Exchange (BOVESPA), the Brazilian Clearing and Depository Corporation (CBLC) and the National Association of Investment Banks (ANBID) promoted the fourth North American edition of the “BEST: Brazilian Excellence in Securities Transactions” in New York, on June 26th; and San Francisco, on June 27th. Around 350 people, representing banks, brokerage houses, hedge funds, investment funds, custodians, and dealers, attended lectures about opportunities in the Brazilian financial and capital markets, and about their efficiency, security, and reliability. This year, besides the USA, the event was also present in Canada, in a lunch meeting for 45 people in Toronto.

The road show started with a panel composed by Brazilian Government Representatives. The director of monetary policy of the Brazilian Central Bank, Mr. Mario Torós and the Brazilian Securities and Exchange director, Mrs. Maria Helena Santana, addressed issues related to the Brazilian market infrastructure and domestic market regulations. The head of the public department of the Brazilian National Treasury, Mr. Otávio Ladeira de Medeiros briefly explained the public debt strategy for 2007 and the coming years. In a dynamic panel, the private sector elucidated some aspects of the Brazilian financial and capital markets. In the sequence, Mr. Paulo Valle, the National Treasury Deputy Secretary, delivered his speech about the Brazilian macroeconomic scenario.

In order to promote a more interactive opportunity for investors to deepen their knowledge of products and services provided by the Brazilian Exchanges, Clearinghouses and Banks, three parallel workshops took place during the event in New York:
  • BM&F coordinated a panel on derivatives and government bonds;
  • BOVESPA and CBLC discussed equities, equity derivatives and fixed income instruments and;
  • ANBID lectured on the asset management industry.

Besides the main events, parallel meetings with clients from private institutions were held in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. A total of 200 people participated in these meetings.

The BEST events aim at promoting the Brazilian financial and capital markets to international investors on a regular basis, with annual meetings held in the most important financial centers in Europe, United States and Asia. The following one will be in Asia in Singapore on November 6th; and Hong Kong, on November 8th.
