BBA chief executive Angela Knight said:
"Banks are working hard to get cash out to good causes through the dormant accounts scheme.
"Banks have been central to the delivery of the Reclaim Fund which - through Big Society Capital - uses money from customers' dormant accounts for social and community causes. But no one with money lying untouched in the bank need worry - cash will be kept back for people who come forward and the BBA's mylostaccount scheme is there to help people search for their funds for free.
"We recognise people's growing interest in how their money is used and we are delighted to have been able to help make Big Society Capital work and enable banks and investors to combine financial return with social good."
Background:
1. The BBA helps reunite customers with money in dormant accounts through www.mylostaccount.org.uk, which is approaching its 4th anniversary. The service has generated 1.6 million visits to its website during this time, generating 500,000 search applications. It is estimated that bank and building society customers have been reunited with over £150 million.
