Bank Of England - Mutual Interests - Speech By Sam Woods, Deputy Governor For Prudential Regulation And Chief Executive Officer Of The Prudential Regulation Authority, Given At The Building Societies Annual Conference

Date 05/05/2021

Sam Woods sets out how we plan to regulate building societies in the future.

Sam Woods

Deputy Governor for Prudential Regulation and Chief Executive Officer of the Prudential Regulation Authority

He starts by explaining our proposals for a new ‘strong and simple’ regime for small building societies.

Then he covers the link between two ongoing reviews that are relevant for large building societies. The first is the review of the leverage ratio. The second is the review of MRELs (minimum requirements for own funds and eligible liabilities).

Next, he talks about mortgage risk-weights. Something that affects all building societies.

Sam ends by saying that the Prudential Regulation Authority is moving into a new phase of making regulatory rules now the UK has left the EU. It will mean even more engagement with firms on the key issues.
