Date 03/10/2002

The Lord Mayor, Michael Oliver, today (Thursday) applauded the willingness of London's maritime sector to work together to promote London as the world's premier maritime services centre.

Opening the sixth Maritime London exhibition at the Baltic Exchange he said:

"One of the reasons for London's maritime success story has been the willingness of the various disciplines to work together. There is no better symbol of this than Maritime London, which is made up of close to 100 of London's leading maritime service providers. Maritime London plays a vital role in the promotion of London to the wider world and the Corporation of London is proud of having supported this organisation since its inception in 2000. Promoting the City and its worth is vital to all our future endeavours."

He added that he was impressed by the immense contribution made by maritime services to the UK economy reflected in the around £1 billion contribution to the country's invisible earnings and the employment of some 14,000 people.

Maritime London chairman David Cobb noted that Maritime London would be supporting the Seatrade London Maritime Convention 16-18 September 2003 at the ExCel Centre. This event will be a large international event showcasing maritime industries from around the world.
