August 2009 volume in VIX futures, based on the CBOE Volatility Index (ticker VX), totaled 104,861 contracts, an increase of 18 percent from 88,941 contracts traded during the previous month, while also rising 23 percent from 85,591 contracts traded in August 2008.Average daily volume in VIX futures during August was 4,993contracts, 23 percent ahead of 4,043 contracts per day in July, and 22 percent more than 4,076 contracts per day from a year ago.
Volume in CFE's newest contract, the CBOE mini-VIX futures (ticker symbol VM), totaled 629 contracts traded during August, off 26 percent from 845 contracts during July.CBOE mini-VIX futures contracts are one-tenth the size of CFE's standard CBOE VIX futures contract.CBOE mini-VIX futures were launched in March 2009.
