On 29 March 2017, the day that the United Kingdom triggered Article 50, formally beginning the Brexit negotiations, the European Commission blocked the proposed merger between Deutsche Boerse AG and London Stock Exchange Group.
The majority of exchanges continued to demonstrate strong returns for investors with stellar performances on the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index in Q1 of 2017. Bolsa Mexicana de Valores SAB de CV topped the leader board with an increase in share value of 24.4 per cent in Q1 2017 against a 17.0 per cent decrease in Q4 2016.
BM&FBOVESPA experienced a 19.8 per cent increase in Q1 2017 followed by Warsaw Stock Exchange with a 17.1 per cent increase for the same period.
The share price performance of JSE was the bottom of the Index table with a 20.0 per cent decrease in share value during Q1 2017. Nairobi Stock Exchange experienced a 10.3 per cent decrease in share value in Q1 2017, followed by TMX Group with a 5.2 per cent decrease during the same period.
The Index, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of the exchanges’ performance, saw a 1.4 per cent increase in March 2017. Overall, the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchange Index experienced a 6.5 per cent increase in Q1 2017, buoyed by a strong January result. This compared to a 0.6 per cent increase in Q4 2016 and a 1.0% increase in Q1 2016.
Commenting on the Index which closed up at 39,212.17 on 31 March 2017, Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index said:
“The markets have reacted positively to the European Commission blocking the tie-up of the London Stock Exchange Group and Deutsche Boerse, killing off a merger it said would create a 'de facto monopoly in the markets for clearing fixed income instruments' with shares in both parties rising. Deutsche Boerse and London Stock Exchange Group intend to pursue existing strategic goals despite their failed merger and are not likely to be part of any large transactions with both exchanges signalling that their strategy is to keep calm and carry on".
The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars in March was Mexico’s Bolsa Mexicana de Valores SA with a 13.7 per cent increase in share price from 28 February 2017 to 31 March 2017. The next best performer was Bursa Malaysia with a 11.8 per cent increase over the same period.
The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars in March was JSE with a 22.8 per cent decrease in share price from 28 February 2017 to 31 March 2017. This was followed by Dubai Financial Market with a 14.4 per cent decrease over the same period.
