April Volume On Winnipeg Commodity Exchange Up 18% From A Year Ago

Total volume of trade on Winnipeg Commodity Exchange Inc. (WCE) for the month of April 2007 was 294,233 contracts representing an increase of 18% from April 2006. This level of total trade is also 30.4% over that recorded last month.

Western barley futures contract trade activity during April was 33.8% higher than a year ago with 12,525 contracts changing hands during the month. There were also 2,060 western barley options contracts traded.

Trade in canola futures contracts rose 19.3% from last year to 273,755 contracts. A total of 798 canola options contracts traded during April as well.

Feed wheat futures contract volume for April totaled 5,095 contracts.

Crop year-to-date total volume (since August 1, 2006) is 2,349,835 contracts which is 20.1% higher than a year ago. Increased volume of trade in western barley futures (60.8%) and options contracts (642.2%) has bolstered the crop year-to-date volumes.

At the end of April 2007, total open interest stood at 124,895 contracts which is an increase of 7.5% from the same time last year.

Winnipeg Commodity Exchange Inc., established in 1887, has been facilitating futures contract trading since 1904. WCE is Canada's only agricultural futures and options exchange and North America's first fully electronic commodity exchange. WCE offers futures and options contracts on canola, domestic feed wheat, and western barley.
