11.7 million transactions were registered on Euronext’s cash markets in April, a daily average of 583,000, down 9.8% on the same month last year, which was particularly active for April. The total of 53.4 million transactions completed in the year-to-date represents an increase of 8.7% compared to the same period of last year. The daily average of 635,000 transactions registered in the year-to-date is up 7.4% on the same period of last year.
Shares
11 million share transactions were completed in April. A total of 50.7 million transactions have been made since the beginning of the year, representing an average daily volume of 604,000, and 9.6% up on the same period in 2003.
Trackers
There were 26,000 transactions in trackers during April, or 1,300 per day. In the year-to-date there have been 117,710 transactions in trackers in total.
Derivatives products
Euronext.liffe, the international derivatives business of Euronext, had its busiest April ever, trading 69.9 million contracts, an increase of 38% on April 2003. On average 3.5 million contracts were traded every day. A total of 304 million contracts have been traded so far this year, up 32% on the same period in 2003.
The new Eurodollar future traded 206,000 contracts in April taking its average daily volume to over 10,000 contracts for the month. Open interest has continued to grow, and stood at 32,100 on 29 April. There has been increasing evidence of broader participation and interest in using Euronext.liffe’s Eurodollar contract.
Individual Equity Products showed the strongest growth, trading over 30 million contracts in April, up 60% on April 2003. Over 26 million short-term interest rate contracts were traded during April 2004, an increase of 40% year-on-year. Commodity products have also continued to grow with volumes up 20% in the year-to-date.
