Alderman Alan Yarrow, Chartered FCSI(Hon) and Chairman of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) has been elected Sheriff of the City of London for the year 2011/12.
The election of the two new Sheriffs of London took place last Friday at the Guildhall of the City of London. Joining Alan as Sheriff is Wendy Mead.
The office of Sheriff dates back to the 7th century and is of long-standing importance in the government of the City of London. The Sheriffs attend sessions in the Central Criminal Court at the Old Bailey and support the Lord Mayor in carrying out his official duties and in promoting UK financial services and the City of London through an extensive programme of overseas visits. To be considered as a candidate for the office of Lord Mayor an Alderman must previously have served as Sheriff.
Alderman Yarrow said: “It is an honour to take on this role and I look forward to executing my shrieval duties, including the promotion of the City of London as a world leader in international financial and business services.”
Alderman Alan Yarrow was appointed Chairman of CISI in September 2009, having previously served on the Board between 2001 and 2005. He left Dresdner Kleinwort in December 2009, after 37 years with the group, latterly as Group Vice Chairman and Chairman of the UK Bank. Alan currently holds several non-executive posts as Chairman of CISI, Chairman of Kleinwort Benson Financial Services Holdings and a Director of Turquoise Services and of Fixnetix. He was formerly Deputy Chairman of the FSA Practitioner Panel, Chairman of the London Investment Banking Association (LIBA), director of Complinet, a member of the Takeover Panel and of the Council of the British Bankers Association. He was also a member of the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s High Level Stakeholder Group.
