497 Billion Euros In Turnover On The German Stock Exchanges In January - Xetra Continues To Gain Ground, Also In Small Caps

A total volume of 497,2 billion euros was traded on the German stock exchanges in January, roughly 14 percent more than the month before. The total comprises 365 billion euros in equities, warrants and exchange-traded funds and 132.1 billion euros in fixed-income securities. About 90 percent of the equities turnover nationwide was posted on the Frankfurt exchange.

The order-book statistics, which are based on single counting of all transactions in the order book of Xetra and broker-supported trading on the floor, show that a total volume of 108.9 billion euros was traded in equities on the German stock exchanges in January. Of this total, 99 billion euros was traded in German equities, and 87.4 percent, or 86.6 billion euros, of this volume was traded through Xetra. Another 9.3 percent (or 9.2 billion euros) was posted in trading on the floor of FWB, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The successfully launched XTF Segment (Exchange Traded Funds) reached new record trading volumes of 2.3 billion euros compared to previous months figures of 368 million Euro. This is an increase of some 600 percent.

Xetra has continued to expand its market share in the last 12 months, especially in the small and mid-cap segments. Whereas the Xetra electronic trading system accounted for 42.5 percent of all turnover in the MDAX issues in January 2000, its share in January this year was already 67 percent. Xetra also gained quite a bit of ground in the SDAX and NEMAX-50 stocks on an annual comparison, increasing from a 24.19 percent share of the SDAX turnover in January 2000 to 37.2 percent in January 2001. In the NEMAX-50, 62 percent of all turnover in this segment is traded through Xetra in the meantime, as compared with 38.7 percent in January last year.

Siemens was the most active DAX blue chip in January according to the order-book statistics, with volume of 12.6 billion euros traded in its shares. Nokia was the most traded foreign stock with volume of 1.8 billion euros traded. MLP was the leading MDAX stock, with 292 million euros in shares traded. Intershop was the top Neuer Markt stock in January with share turnover of 998 million euros. In the SMAX (small-cap quality) segment, OAR ranked first with a volume of 31.2 million euros traded in its shares.
